I'm looking for some advice from seasoned pros :D

My husband will be landing in a little over 2 weeks.
Can someone help me with the following questions?

Can he work as soon as he lands (or weeks after)- or does he need to wait for his PR card to arrive?

Can I apply for his SIN with just his landing papers?

(Ontario residents) how long will it take for him to be able to drive? He has an Indian license. I have been to the MTO website but it is a little ambiguous. He has had his license longer than 2 years (been driving a lot longer but got license years later..yes I know, it's India).

To obtain health card- it's 3 months after landing correct?

Anything else he needs to do and know before landing and at the time of landing??

Thanks!!

Also, does he need a record of vaccinations?

It is very doubtful that he will have one... though he can check with his mom if she has kept it.

He can work as soon as he lands. Technically he needs a SIN number but I remember when I first moved to Canada long ago, I was able to work before I got my SIN card. When I got my number, I updated them. But then again my employer sponsored me (work permit) so they obviously knew I would get a SIN number. Maybe other employers will make you wait.

I think all he needs are his papers to get a SIN card. I think it comes pretty quick if I remember correctly.

OHIP: Yes, 3 months. And also he has to stay in Ontario for at least 153 days out of his first 183 days in Canada. Otherwise they can take it away.

He'll need a B4(?) form which details the goods he will import to Canada when he lands.

Thank you!

Any idea about the drivers license??

Depending on where he is landing, some office won't issue permanent SIN and until he get the permanent SIN he cannot work. Some other offices won't issue SIN until you get PR card in the mail. Since he is landing in Ontario, it is likely that he will be given a SIN on day of landing. The Etobicoke office usually gives SIN after landing.

As for Ontario health card, he could have applied for OHIP when he gotten AIP status. Since he hasn't been on OHIP since AIP, he will likely be qualified to be on OHIP as soon as he land providing that he show his AIP papers to Ontario service. He would get OHIP coverage 3 months after AIP dated letter. If he cannot produce his AIP, Ontario service will make him wait 3 months after landing as there was no other offical proof that he been in Ontario since AIP status.

As for Ontario drivers licence, he could have gotten it anytime while living in Ontario. My wife was able to trade in her foreign drivers licence for Ontario drivers licence regardless of her immigraton status in Canada. The MTO didn't even ask for immigration papers like AIP, or anything. Just her New Jersey drivers licence, proof of NJ driving history (when licence first issued) and a 5 year drivers abstract record. Mind you, he would still have to follow the rules of exchanging driver licence with foreign drivers licence. He would have to follow the procedures required for Indian driver licence exchange based on Ontario agreement with India, if there is such an agreement. If there is no exchange agreement, he would require to get Indian government letter stating proof of driving history and record. Otherwise he would be treated a new driver and put on the graduate licence program.

What is an AIP letter? he JUST got his COPR on the 22nd of August.

I live in Northern Ontario, so do i just contact a Service Canada centre for his SIN? I just got my son's SIN and I applied online. He was born in India but is a Canadian Citizen.

In India there is no records as such kept for drivers. I guess he can try getting a letter that he has had his drivers license more than 2 years.

AIP letter is "approved in principle" letter. It is a letter addressed to your husband that he qualifies for permanent resident under sponsorship. This usually arrive about 6 months after application was first submitted.

If he can produce the AIP letter to ontario service, he can get on OHIP coverage the moment he applies. Otherwise ontario service will make him wait 3 months after landing for OHIP coverage.

If he cannot get letter from indian government for driving recordn he will be put on ontario graduate licence. He may end up in graduate even with proof of driving history but he won't have to wait 2 years to get full licence. May take his experience into consideration and allow him to get full licence sooner than 2 years.

The person here has applied outland, so this does not apply to them. The new PR is not in Canada now, so needs to wait 3 full months after landing before being eligible for health care in Ontario (though they can apply for the card right away it won't be activated until 3 months later)

No, it's not required.

You should be able to just bring COPR + passport into a service Canada office, and get your SIN # on the spot. Your card arrives by mail a bit later, but all you need is the # to start working.

Sorry my mistake. When I saw COPR, I thought he had applied inland, not outland. So the AIP note doesn't apply here. He would have to apply for OHIP as earilest as possible after landing. He will still have to wait 3 months before he can qualify for coverage. There is no different in when he applies really. If he waited 3 months before applying, he would qualify on the spot since 3 months residency rule has passed.

Make sure he brings his drivers licence abstract/history. They use it to prove experience. He will have to pass at least two tests to get his full Ontario licence.

Getting this in India will be interesting. Let's see what he can do.

hey there skas13.......try and tell your husband to get an international driver license/permit before he comes to canada....this will allow him to drive until the international license expired. this will give him the chance to get use to driving in canada also and he can drive as soon as he step outside the airport.....by doing this.....he can try and get the ontario license in the mean time....
