It's so funny... we don't even have winter here really. I was hoping for snow all winter, and February was our last chance. I don't know what they are thinking, maybe they think all of Canada is cold.
Toronto was a lot colder when I was a kid (40 years ago...ugh). You would get snow that lasted from mid Novemeber until the end of March guaranteed. Lots of -20C days. The last 5 years I was there I could work outside all winter without a winter coat.
I'm not so lucky here in Winnipeg. 3 weeks of -40 to -45C had me thinking maybe its better if I just emmigrate to the Philippines.

It's been really mild here too. Everyone said last winter was mild. This has been more like a cold spring. Temperature has only dipped near -20 a handful of times at night. Heck it was +7 and sunny a few weekends ago. My winter boots are busy collecting dust!

Welcome to Canada!

Hopefully you're moving somewhere dry and not humid. The moisture makes the cold 100x worse!

My husband stays in Mississauga... What do you reckon about that place?

and -20 is coldddd! tell me, can you really tell the difference between say -10, -20 and -30? or do all of these temperatures just fall into the "mind numbingly cold" bracket..

When I was in Ontario last winter it wasn't very cold, and the Ontarioans were embarrassed.. they wanted to prove that those winters they talked about were real. Everybody kept explaining to me that it was usually much colder! I was like yeah right guys...

Minus temps also have whats called a wind chill effect or factor. So depending upon wind and the convection rate that the body loses heat the wind chill will always be colder than the temperature recorded. The weather channel will state that the temp is -20C but because of the wind chill factor it feels like -30C or -40C.

-20C in Toronto will always feel colder than -20C in Winnipeg because Winnipeg is a much dryer climate than Toronto which is surrounded by bthe Great Lakes.

Mississauga is ok depending on where you are. I grew up around Dixie and Bloor streets in an area called Applewood Hills. Very suburban. You really need a car to get around. Traffic is always heavy unless you are Filipino you will find it normal.

Oh damnnn! lol... I guess it's just a matter of getting used to...
We are towards Oakville... In my opinion quite suburban as well... But then I'm used to being in the absolute heart of a city so anything else is reallly different :)

Weather wise, Oakville/GTA area gets hit with most of the storms from the southern states. This year they've been hit three times, and it's only March 1!

Oh YES. -10 can be delightful, if there's not much wind. I don't even wear my coat to run errands on those days anymore. My favourite days are the -5 to -12 or so, when there's some sun and no wind. It's not warm enough to start melting the snow and making everything all dirty and slushy, but your fingers don't go instantly numb or anything. Perfect skiing/boarding weather! (I just tried boarding for the first time this winter...and by that, I mean I tried falling down a lot while strapped onto a snowboard.) -20 is pretty gross. You don't want to do anything outside if you don't have to, and you want to let the car warm up for a while before you get into it. at -20, I'm dressed in two layers of pants and three layers of shirts, and I don't go outside without gloves. -30, it hurts your lungs to breathe when you first step outside, and the inside of your nose immediately starts to freeze and crackle. (Yep, I'd never felt THAT before!). Your car sounds like crap for the first kilometre or so, because even machinery doesn't want to work in those temps.

We've had about two pretty cold (highs around -20) weeks here, but mostly it's been okay. I'm pretty used to this winter thing now. The only thing that bugs me is how HOT they keep businesses (grocery stores, the mall, etc). The locals will just leave their coats and scarves on for their whole shopping trip, but I'm burning up within about 5 minutes. I've always got to come out of my coat, and often one of my other layers.

CJG, I have a sense of humour, but I have heard your disparaging "joke" a thousand times. It's very hard to read anything that is NOT disparaging about Quebec these days.

But in any event I haven't lived in Quebec for 25 years. So I'm more of a Franco-Ontarian now!

Considering the comment wasn't directed at you I think you may be just a bit overly sensitive. I do not disregard the importance of the french influence in our history but I also won't take Quebecers so seriously not to make a few jokes at their expense.
I've made a few jokes about Winnipeg as well. I haven't seen anyone get bent out of shape about that.
