Old permits?

I was originally in Canada on a work permit, which then got renewed (and then has since expired). Before it expired, I applied for and received a visitor permit, which is currently valid for about 6 more months. However, if I were to take a trip outside of Canada and then try to re-enter Canada while an outland spousal PR app is in process, should I keep the two old work permits and the visitor permit stapled in my passport, as they now are? Or should I remove the expired ones? I had thought it made sense to keep them in there to show my history, but someone else suggested I should take them out to simplify things. I have no idea if there are any rules on what to do with expired permits, and I thought someone on here might know.

There are no rules about this. Even if a permit is valid, you don't have to keep it stapled in your passport. It's up to you.

My husband kept his expired ones in his passports as well. Then a few months ago while coming into Canada, a CBSA border guard took them all out! He didn't say that he couldn't have them, but he never said why he took them out either. We never asked as we only speak when spoken to at the border.

No problem. It makes sense to keep a valid permit in your passport if you are leaving and re-entering Canada. CBSA will want to see it. But it's just not a rule.
