Hi,

I just sent our application to Sponsor my wife. If all goes well and smooth I have been told she could receive PR by October (if not earlier). Our application is very straight forward and should have no issues, but will see. Anyways, regarding my wife, do we need to wait until she receives PR to apply for OHIP? If so, how to we go through this process? Regarding our children, they are both dual citizens (Canadian and Swedish). We will arrive in Canada on April 3 2017. I'm under the impression that they will receive OHIP as being dual Canadian citizens. What's the process to aquire them both OHIP ASAP once in Canada?

Your children will qualify for OHIP three months after they arrive in Canada. You'll need to purchase insurance to cover emergencies during the three months waiting period. Same will apply to you if you've been outside of Canada for long enough to lose your OHIP coverage. Your wife will qualify for OHIP three months after her PR application is approved and she lands in Canada and officially becomes a permanent resident. Similar to your children, it's recommended you purchase private insurance to cover her for emergencies during the waiting period.

Sounds good and thanks for a clear reply. Shall we purchase insurance in Canada or abroad here in Sweden? Or does it not really matter just as long as we are covered?

It doesn't matter where the insurance is purchased. However you should certainly buy it before you leave for Canada to ensure coverage kicks in as soon as you are here.

Quick question, how do we (myself and kids) prove to OHIP when we arrived in Canada?

Wife should be easy as we could show proof of PR date.

I would strongly advise to purchase your travel medical insurance from a Canadian company.

If you purchase from a Sweden insurer, they will expect that it's a temporary trip to Canada, not that you are permanently moving there. So if any emergency happens requiring extended medical care, the insurer may demand you return to Sweden to continue treatments (where the country's healthcare could kick in to lessen cost to the insurer) else they will stop payments.

Also it's much easier dealing with claims with a Canadian company, vs trying to send documents/receipts or do phone calls back and forth from Sweden.

Not sure what they accept as proof, but I assume a flight itinerary may suffice. Or if there was any stamp in the passport.

OHIP will cover people after a certain stage is reached in their processing, even with an outland application. There is an old thread on this here: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t56695.0.html

As for your kids, if they have citizenship certificates or Canadian passports, you can register for OHIP as soon as you all have arrived and gained some documents to prove you are residing in ON such as bank statements or utility bills with your names on them and an ON address. However, the OHIP waiting period for newcomers after you move to ON is 90 days. That goes for you too so make sure you get travel or temporary insurance for your whole family to cover you until you get OHIP.

Now, I am planning to move permanently in the coming month of March.

As per the OHIP eligibility:
- you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residence in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence); and
- you are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period.

Could some experts please guide me on how I can get OHIP after moving to Ontario. I understand that I will not be covered under OHIP for first 3 months.
1. But considering above eligibility clauses, am I going to get surprises?
2. How long should I consider the private insurance? Should I take it from a company in Ontario?
3. Any one who had similar situation explain how they managed?
