OHIP expired

I left Canada in 2005, and now I have just returned back. I know that OHIP has expired and I also know that there will be 3 months waiting time before I can use any of the services. But my question is do I need to apply immediately or wait for three months to pass and get some temporary coverage in the mean time. Is it three months after I apply for it or is it three months after you enter in Canada. In other words if I apply say after 4 months, will it become active immediately or will I have to wait another 3 months after the application?

It is 3 months after you arrive and you may apply earlier than 3 months once you have collected proof that you are residing in ON. You will not get your OHIP card though until 3 months from the time you arrived.

So once you "land" you go to OHIP and fill out paperwork and then wait the 3 months for your OHIP card OR do you go into OHIP 3 months after you have arrived and fill the paperwork out then?

You may apply earlier than 3 months once you have collected proof that you are residing in ON.

If you go to OHIP as soon as you arrive, they will ask you for proof that you are living in ON which could be a lease agreement, utility bills etc. and you will not have any yet so you will just have wasted your time. Instead, keep proof of your arrival date and get the necessary documents to prove your residence in ON and then go apply for OHIP. It could be after a month or two of living in ON. You will then get the card a month or two later once you have filled your 3 months.

Yes, they could have started earlier. OHIP rules state that your time starts when you get first stage approval. If you applied inland, you know when your first stage approval was but if you applied outland, it happens when the visa officers enters some info in their computer and you don't actually know when that was. There was a member on this forum who fought OHIP for his wife's coverage and won. Yes, you should be eligible earlier. The lady at the OHIP office is wrong. You should appeal to the OHIP Eligibility Review Committee. You will certainly be eligible earlier than they are telling you, probably by a month or two at least.

I applied October of 2013 and I didn't hear anything till may first when they requested more prove and more information and the deadline was june 30th. Everything was sent before the due date. So ur saying I should be eligible since the date the immigration officer enters my info In the system? Would that be may first or june 30th? Or when they started processing my application on July 11th? Please help me. And should I go back to the ohip office amd say what?

Again, my name was on the lease and I stopped working when I got married. So I lived most of the time in ontario with my husband and I crossed the boarder once every 6 weeks for a week so I dont over stay amd at the boarder I would say I am visiting family. Lol

If you appeal the effective date of your OHIP coverage to the Eligibility Review Committee, they will make inquiries with CIC to determine what that date was, and adjust your OHIP eligibility date accordingly. That date will be earlier than the date you got COPR, so you need to write the OHIP Eligibility Review Committee a letter and they will give you an answer in about six weeks or so.

Ok since Iam due in 6 weeks or less. If I pay the money and then receive the letter saying I was eligible for ohip at the time of delivery would they pay me back?

In my wife's case they told us that they would cover her for any medical expenses she had incurred after her OHIP eligibility date. She hadn't had any.

If I were you, I would get that appeal off ASAP and tell them you are due in 6 weeks. Hopefully they will expedite their response.

Thank you so much leon. I forgot to add that I am a Canadian citizen and the ohip card that I have is very old one with red and white color (without photo). I am not sure if that is still in use. But once I apply I may get a new number as well. The information you gave is very useful to me, so thank a lot again.
