@xylene and @KRP , so both of you applied OCI 12 and 15 March and received final booklet on 26 April? So, total period is only 1.5 months? Please confirm. I was thinking it will take more than 2 months.

I am expecting oath soon and planning to start OCI immediately as I am planning to travel to India in Sept and I was concerned whether I have enough time to get OCI

B.t.w, which BLS office processed your applications- Toronto / Brampton or any other?

All postal applications are processed at Brampton office.
45 to 50 days is regular time frame. But it could vary depending on additional documentation requirements or just how busy they are.

Hi, I am new to this thread. I applied for my daughters OCI in Surrey (Vancouver)BLS office on April 1st, 2019. when I check the status it tells " Processing at Consulate General"..Also, I didn't receive any acknowledgment till now. Is it normal to take this much time for acknowledgment?

Try checking your status at https://ociservices.gov.in/welcome using Canadian passport number and OCI ref number.

Thanks for the info. Is there any spreadsheet in this thread for OCI Timelines like our Citizenship application timeline?

Hi All,

I received my Canadian Citizenship certificate. I am now wondering what would be my flow of steps?
  1. Apply for Canadian Passport
  2. Then, apply for OCI
Or can I do both the things in parallel?

No. You can not do in parallel. You will need a Canadian passport to renunciate Indian passport first. The usual process is Canadian passport (1-2 weeks), Indian passport renunciation (1 week), OCI (4-6 weeks). Based on some posts in this forum, some BLS centers allow the concurrent filing of OCI and Indian passport renunciation.

you can do surrender of Indian passport and oci together after you receive your Canadian ppt.

A few quick questions, would appreciate if anyone would chime in:
From a cost perspective, would it better to take the photographs at the BLS center ?

Do they provide a digital version of the photo too ?

How did you people adjust the aspect ratio for the photo/scanned version of the signature ? I am thinking of just writing down mine on an A4 sized paper, and then scanning it, but have no clue how to adjust the aspect ratio....

@xylene @KRP

What does the following question in the online oci registration form mean under the family details section :

Relationship with the root Indian

Do I have to identify as "self", or do I mention the relationship of my father with me ?
I called BLS and they were unsure too...

are you talking about your relatives living in India? You would mention something like

Name Mother Address
Name2 Father Address
Name3 Brother Address

No, I'm referring to the first page of Part A of the online application. Under the family details section for a single applicant, I list out the names and occupations of my parents.

Then, comes this question: relation with the root Indian

Any thoughts what root Indian refers to ?

If you have an Indian passport, mention self. This for applicants who are applying for OCI based on their parent's origin.

Hi @xylene , need some suggestions. My oath is on 16 May. So, I hope I should get Canadian passport by May end or June beginning. So there will be three months from June till Sept 1st week when I have to travel to India. Which option shown below is the best for me?

1) Apply and get OCI card in these three months. (I don't know whether it is 100% sure to get it in this time frame since I am not sure what are the reasons for delay of OCI processing.)
2) Take e-visa and travel and apply OCI after coming back from India (This will cause additional charges for the e-visa)
3) Apply for OCI in June and hope to get it before Sept. By any chance, if OCI is not obtained even by end of August, then apply and get e-Visa. But is it possible to do like this? (If this is possible, it is great.) Will Indian Consulate give e-visa or visitor visa while the OCI is under processing?

Thanks :)
