Does anybody have any experience of applying OCI while in India?

I'm asking because I am thinking that after getting Canadian passport:
1. Travel to India on Indian passport within 3 months of getting citizenship
2. Surrender Indian Passport in India
3. Apply for OCI in India
4. Fly back to Canada on Canadian Passport and Surrender certificate + old Cancelled Indian passport with Entry stamp (within or after 3 months)

"Even after acquiring the Canadian citizenship, the Indian passport can be used to travel for 3 months from the day of getting the Canadian citizenship. However, penalty will be charged if the passport is used after 3 months." (from http://www.cgitoronto.gov.in/eoi.php?id=surrender_certificate)

"2. Penalty for travelling on Indian Passport after acquiring Canadian citizenship is C$ 343 for each time, subject to a maximum of C$ 1711"
"CLARIFICATIONS 4. There is a grace period of three months after acquisition of foreign nationality (to be counted from the date of registration / Naturalisation Certificate and not from the date of foreign passport) for using Indian passport for travel."

This will make things more complicated if you are coming back in 3 or 4 months take 1 year tourist visa go and come back no question will be asked about surrender or oci

Then u have 3 years time to do these things
Most of the people say it’s easier to apply oci from place where u live

If you have long term plan in India then procedure is different

If you post your travel plan and restrictions, someone might be able to suggest a better plan. Even though the website says no issues for 3 months, I have been skeptical as it gives too many headaches. You never know with Indian embassy, they can raise concern with anything.

Not sure I understand this status. I guess it will be ready for pickup soon.

Same status here. I checked in the evening and status changed to
Original documents Delivered by Hand
(Passport ready For Dispatch after OCI stamping).

Now the question is whether I have to collect my OCI card or it will be mailed to me by BLS. I will have to confirm it tomorrow.

@ramkris What if I plan to stay 6-8 months in India? What would be the procedure then?

If you want everything clean and no hassle, here is a plan. There could be different plans too -

Plan A
1) Surrender passport in Canada
2) Get 1 yr visa from Canada (faster processing than OCI)
3) Travel to India on Canadian passport and India visa
4) Come back
5) (Optional) Apply for OCI

Plan B
1) Travel to India on Indian passport (3 month grace period)
2) Surrender passport
3) Apply for OCI
4) Travel back on Canadian passport and OCI

Plan A is cleaner because you are not in any pressure to get paperwork done. For plan B to work, your trip needs to be longer. 6-8 months is good time for plan B too. But dont delay too much, apply soon. If you are going for 4 months, then you are really in pressure waiting for your paperwork done. If I am on vacation, I would want to have a relaxed mind where I can enjoy with my friends and family and not worry about paperwork.
