I wonder if anyone has complained to MEA and/or the Indian mission in Canada about this daylight robbery. They are selling appointments for $15 each and then you have to opt for the drop off service. Between my wife and me, it means two appointments, two applications, two separate couriers apart from the service cost of visa / OCI. The only reason I would want to get an OCI is never to deal with BLS again. I wish they would reinstate e-visa. There would be no need to even surrender your passport then. (Maybe that is the reason they have discontinued the option.)

I wouldn't be surprised if they get a cut from BLS, and so they turn a blind eye.

what is the timeline for surrendering Indian passport after receiving citizenship ? I don't have any travel plans for 2-3 yrs.
And i was hoping I can surrender passport after 2-3 yrs. will there be any issue or charges for not surrendering passport. (just an FYI; I will not travel with Indian passport in the meantime, its just that i don't want to spend immediately on surrendering Indian passport, i rather do it when there is a need to travel to India and apply for OCI)

You have to surrender Immediately as per CGI, Toronto. I wouldn't wait too long as they would just charge you more as penalties if you do it too late. The penalties start after 3 years though and it is Rs. 10,000/-, so you could wait till then.

You would need a SC to apply for a visa if you don't have an OCI. I would advise to just do it and get it over with. You can apply for an OCI at a later stage, but do the SC now if possible.

There was a change.org petition with 5000+ signatures. It seems they don't care.

My BLS tracker changed to 'Processing at High Commission' today. Fingers crossed. I hope that they send me back my original documents soon. Have a good weekend everybody!

Bhai log....aapke pass mein jo jo kagaz hai....sab le jaane ka......inn logo ka koi bharosa nahi hai......kuch bhi maang lete hain......aur jo checklist mein nahi hai...woh toh definitely they ask.....

The policy is that the surrender should be made within 3 years for no penalty, and a penalty of INR 10,000 after that for retention.

But you may only use it as a travel document within 3 months of acquiring foreign citizenship. So, if you seek Visa, OCI etc, you must surrender.

If you use it as a travel document beyond 3 months, there is a fine of INR 10,000 per use (not to exceed INR 50,000).

Hi guys , from all the experienced people here just wanted to check what original documents are BLS toronto keeping for OCI ? Will they just check originals and return . I have appointment on monday so please do confirm

We should all complain againest BLS . They should not ask for documents other then mentioned in Checklist . Its extra work for everyone even themselves
