Sorry - I always use the calculator. I've never tried calculating things manually. The citizenship calculator should tell you when you will be eligible to apply for citizenship (if you enter all of your information correctly).
Note that the requirements for citizenship are quite different than PR. PR is 2 years out of the last 5. Citizenship is 3 years out of the last 4. For this reason it is wrong to assume that once you meet PR residency obligations you just need another year of residency for citizenship.
