I assume that you are an inland applicant. In that case the former will apply to you(you'll be virtually landed). But if you are an outland applicant, you'll have to get your passports stamped.

Thanks for the answer! Stamp with what? That's what I don't understand. For more context, Canada allows me not to have a visa given that I already have an American tourist visa. I am FSW outland.
Your passport is stamped with an IM-1 visa as an outland applicant. Every outland applicant needs it.
I don't know why my background check is taking so long. In tracker it shows "in-progress" whereas in the GCkey portal it still says "Not Applicable."

I have one dependent. Someone I know who is a single applicant had same ITA and their AOR was 6th Dec, their medicals passed on the same date as me and on the same day they got their final decision. Sigh don't know what variables contribute to long processing of Background check
