Notarized documents

Hello fellow members,

I was required by Los Angeles office to send evidence of my relative's residency in Canada. To save my relative from the expenses of having the documents notarized there, they are going to mail me the originals and I will have them notarized here in LA.

Is there any issue I may have not considered from this step? I mean, is it ok to have those documents notarized here in LA instead in Canada? I just don't want to bother my relative further more that's why.

it will work if u get notarized them in LA. I've attested my sis docs from pakistan

I just want to be sure that it is ok for me to have the original documents (which are not mine and not in my name) to get notarized here.

I've only had my own documents (in my name) notarized in the past.

Skilled Pro, you have to show proof of identity for documents to be notarized/certified. It's not your name on the documents - They have to do it themselves. It would be fine in LA if they were physically present in LA...

Ask your relatives to check with the nearest Service Canada location - where I live, Service Canada has "Commissioners of Oaths" that make certified copies - for free. They should make the photocopies themselves and take the copies and originals to the Service Canada location, and be sure to bring a photo id.

You cannot get a document notarized if you do not have the original UNLESS the notary knows you personally (for example, the notray is a person who works with you and knows you will not notarize a false document). But if you go to someone who does not know you, they will not notarize it. Is better to ask your relatives to do it and you can pay them for it.

Hi where I live in Canada it is free to natorize documents by Natory public every city or small town have one, Iam in Canada I did it free!
so your relatives can do it easy. the trick is if you do it in the US it does not proof that your relatives did it in Canada or maybe they came to visit you and natorize it then?

It's not free in all cities. My sister had to shell out 50 bucks to get her passport copy, birth certificate copy, marriage certificate copy and tax statement notarized in Toronto.

It's not free if you go to a lawyer or other private/commercial service - it is hideously expensive there.

However, as I stated above, Service Canada did it for free - I'm not in Toronto but am in Ontario - I expect it would be the same in Toronto...

BTW - in North America, the difference between notarization and copy certification is that notarization means that the original document is witnessed at the signing. But because a notary public can do both, most people get confused...
