My aunt n uncle moved to Canada 5 years ago .. Highly qualified financial professionals with 12-16 years of work ex. My aunt found a start up kind of job in 6 months appx n uncle was jobless for 2 years ... They lived in the middle east before n made lot of money there n hence were able to scrape thru the bad years . Now they both are in good jobs but if it takes 2 years to break into the job market with my savings , life will be really very tough ..
Both of them have warned me abt ppl rejecting u stating u don't have Canadian work exp.
So my husband and I have planned that I will move there first . He will resign n move to Canada once I stabilize in my job to some extent as we don't want to start digging into our savings. Thats the plan but dunno how things will eventually work out !

It is a Good strategy. I am looking for job from last 2 months and not even had a single interview. Even i tried for a Dishwasher job and no chances here in Toronto.Job condition is really worse.

I think thats a right plan. Both of you shoud not quit your job. If you go alone then you have flexibility in terms of housing and otehr things. You can easily find a female room-mate (if gender bothers u) and then try to land a job -- first one will be any job to pay for food n shelter. The second one you will be looking a job close to your domain.

I did my BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and PG diploma in Financial Planning, both from Delhi, worked for 14 months with a reputed bank also in Delhi. Came to Canada to pursue 1 yr PG certificate in Marketing Management, which I completed in May 2009. Now, I am on PG work permit for 1 yr in Toronto and have submitted over 150 applications in the last 8 months but without success. Working at a gas station to make a living. I am yet to realize commencement of my Canadian dream.

I am sorry to hear this. I hope you get your dream job soon. I am curious what makes you stick with Canada?

Maybe you should try outside Toronto as well. It may be the largest city in Canada but it's far from the only one. At my citizenship ceremony, I met a guy from Iran who was an engineer. He worked as a security guard to make a living for his 6 first months in Canada and that was in Toronto. He was considering moving back to Iran when he finally got a job offer in Alberta in his field. He was quite happy and said he was hoping to open his own business in a few years.

Current economic situation is not all that friendly for new graduates or immigrants. Let's hope the economic recover prevails and North American economic activities improve which will result in improved labor market.... Things look up but how much?

Leon, Encouraging story. Canada do need Engineers, Petro Experts and workers.
I saw lots of Asian born Doctors in Canada. Toronto has a diverse background with people from many countries, Spadina seems like a little chinese market. Scarborough is like a place as if its a combined zone of all nationals.
I also hope like others that Canada gets a fast recovery from the recession but as of now there is no vital sign is evident.

I got my citizenship in 2008 so this guy came to Canada in 2005 and surely the employment situation was somewhat different then but still, nobody should only look for a job in one city, especially when they've been applying for months and it's not going so well.

Canada is big and there are many cities. If somebody feels that they must live in a particular city but can't find a job there, wouldn't it be better to try somewhere else? If they have to move, it's not like it is forever. Once they have Canadian experience, it should be easier to get a job in their city of choice.
