Just had talk with Brother in CAnada.

No jobs in Canada at this time......
He suggested me not to leave my Job in India (I am working with world's largest telecom operator) & wait.

tensions...................... :-\ :-X :'(
Dear Friend,

Your brother is absolutely right, I have been studying and working in Canada since 2006. As a real example I should let you know that I have been keep trying to find a job for the last month since our company moved from Canada to somewhere in south America. Currently, jobs opportunity (regardless of your skills) has severely shrunken.

I hope you find this information useful.

These are solely my views.

Considering the economic situation in Canada (and around the world) it is advisable to do the following.

1. If you are single, young and willing to do odd jobs, by all means go ahead and land, find a shared accomodation, keep your costs to a minimum and you will find a job in your field at some point. I have read about people finding jobs in a month...i have read about people not able to find jobs period.

2. If you are immigrating as a couple (no kids), with both of you currently working in your country of residence, it is advisable for one of you to land and find a shared accomodation and try to find a temp job. The spouse who will still be working might be able to help financially if required. Once you are able to find a decent job in your field you can have your spouse join you.

3. If you are married and have kids...please think twice before moving with family right away. Try and gauge the job market in your field. Find out if the province you are relocating to has a shortage at the moment. Life gets extremely difficult if you move with your spouse and kids to an alien nation without a job in hand.

4. Irrespective of your background, skills and degree, if you are not willing to take up temp jobs for sustaining, now is not a good time to land. For eg, someone who has been the VP or Manager and is not willing to flip hamburgers...seriously rethink your timing of landing. Or set a plan to land, job hunt and return if unable to find a job within a set timeframe.

Just thought i'd give a clear picture. Canada is a beautiful country and i am sure almost all of us will be successful a few years down the lane but we will have to live through the so called "recession" that we all are facing today.

Once again, I do not mean to discourage anyone...I hope and pray that each and every one of us are able to successfully integrate with Canada.
Well described and clarified. Thanks mtlguy.

Here is what 'moneycat' said on the "Canada vs Australia Migration" forum. Though his personal opinion, but I seem to like it...

I live in Australia and moving to Canada now, so I can share these points very well (I think).

Canada:
1) Cheaper to live
2) More opportunities and more interesting things to do in Canada and also near USA
3) North America in general is a better place for Business Owners especially
4) Cheaper schools
5) Much cheaper food & electronics, clothing..etc
6) Housing price (Vancouver) is more or less same as Sydney (Australia); but Toronto & Montreal are much cheaper than Australia
7) Rental in generally is much cheaper in Canada (around 20% to 30% less)
8) Cars are much cheaper in North America

But the weather is a factor, Canada has longer winter time, although. hardly snow in Vancouver. Australia is freaking hot every year, summers can be as long as 6 months, and it is really hot, this has added to huge costs for utilities.

Australia:
1) Job market "seems" to be better than North America now, but it can be a misperception, a lot of jobs do not even exist in Australia especially those relating to IT, Multimedia, Hi-Tech industries. For instance, if you are in network or telecommunications or semiconductors, then it will be hard to find job in Australia, so make sure your skills are relevant to Australiane economy.
2) Cost of living in Australia is a joke, it has been rising every year and is now catching up to Europe. Food is especially expensive here because of fewer competition, high petrol price.
3) Racism is not really an issue in Australia or Canada, back in 1980s and 1990s, it was a big problem. Although, I do not find Australians as "open-minded" as Canadians in terms of accepting other cultures in some rural areas and cities. Generally, it is OK.
4) Not a great place to be a business owner, but a better place to be an "Employee"
5) Do not be fooled that people are laid-back in Australia, living cost is high, so many people have 2 jobs or double-income families; you have to work hard either in Canada or Australia.
6) Utilities bills have skyrocketed over the past few years unfortunately.
7) Very far away from the rest of the world and not many cities to visit in Australia, travel & accomodation costs are very expensive compared to North America. It is close to Asia though if you like to visit Asia regularly (min. 7 hours flight).

I have lived here for over 20 years; the living cost is what has driven many people leaving for overseas, that said, Australia is growing, but at a cost of many benefits; family benefits are not as good as before, fundamentally, it is a small country (population wise), and this means higher cost of living.

Rental cost is very high here, it is normal to see rental A$500/week just for a 2-bedroom apartment in some not-so-good areas.

Interest rate here is also about 3 to 4% higher than Canada, and housing is actually more expensive.

Visit both countries first, go to realestate.com.au to get an idea for property market in Australia.

Both are great countries; I am more in favor of Canada as I like colder weather; and most of my businesses are outside Australia anyway.

Will you be living with your brother, or on your own? Every penny that you can save at this stage counts.

I like mtlguy's advise to take leave, land and look for jobs. That way you'd have both options open.

Have you 'ever' had to do 'any' hard work in India? Have you worked in any restaurants, minimum wage sort of thing? It's not pretty. Plus you'd probably be too tired after a tiring shift to do any meaningful job search.

Your approach would have made perfect sense to me had you been single.

Your optimism is admirable, but you could probably give this thing a little more thought and planning.

Good luck!

Just want to say MOHIT, if yr friend has the same english standard as yours and same qualification as yours, i am not surprised at all that he cant find a job in Canada and u wont be able to find one easily too! With this level of english proficiency and writing skills which is almost incomprehensible!

If i were an employer, i wouldnt even hire you or yr friend at all! No wonder he has difficulty finding a job! If your friend or you have a higher english proficiency then perhaps work could be found more easily! How one finds a job is not just a function of the economy and the job market, its a multi function of language skills, soft skills, hard skills, luck, economy, people skill, contacts, resume etc! I would be surprised that with such low english proficiency level that anyone would want to hire someone whom the employer would have difficulty understanding! So buck up and work on the other functions of finding a job instead of complaining about the economy or something else! Work on the goals and improve on what u have to improve, especially your language skills when u are going to a country that has ENGLISH as a first language and widely used in the country!

I understand what you say that if you already have a good job at home, then why go to an unfamiliar land and gamble right? That depends on your own foresight of the future you want.

I, for example, have a very good job in a government insititution here in abu dhabi. Everyone here in the UAE knows that a post in the government is as good as gold. Despite all the rampant racial discrimination, pay is good and we live a fairly comfortable life, being able to enjoy a tax free income.

BUT, and this is a very big BUT (no pun intended)... I cannot see myself retiring from here and then going home to a country with almost no social security. For what am I staying here for? I save and save but for what? To put my kids through school? To be able to build me a mansion back home? To ready myself financially for medical ailments that will eventually come my way in old age? And to discover in the end that all the years of saving was still barely enough?

I have no need for a mansion. I want a life where I do not need to worry about medical bills when I grow old, for me and my family... I want my kids to go to good schools where they will be given fair opportunity and to not go through all the hassle of credentialling etc etc... I want to be able to travel to other countries wherein I do not have to practically beg for a tourist visa... is this dream so hard to ask? Is this future worth flipping burgers for the first few months? Is it worth the gamble to go there and not be able to find a job quickly?

THIS is the reason why I save for now, to finance the gamble that I am more than willing to take. While I am still young and strong with most of my neurons still firing in my brain. It is wise to wait and be prepared... but do not wait too long.

Well said and well expressed! This is what i call a person who knows his goals and has excellent objective and drive to do what is needed for his family and his future! Really well said, unlike those who want to immigrate yet complain and lack objective and unwilling to work towards a goal and future!
