When applying for extensions of your permits, the expiry date of your child’s passport will indeed affect the duration of their new study permit. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) generally aligns the validity of permits with the passport expiry date.

1. Renew Your Child’s Passport:
• Renew your child’s passport as soon as possible before applying for the permit extensions. This way, the new passport can provide a longer validity period, and IRCC will issue the permits accordingly.

2. Apply for Permit Extensions Now:
• If you can’t renew your child’s passport before applying for extensions, IRCC will likely issue the study permit until March 2026 (matching the passport’s expiry). Once you renew your child’s passport, you can apply again to extend the study permit to align with your work permit.

3. When Applying for Extensions:
• Ensure you provide clear information about your PR application in progress (e.g., AOR details).
• Include proof of your child’s school enrollment and tuition payment if applicable.
• Include proof of your current job if you are applying for an employer-specific work permit or an open work permit based on your PR status.

4. Timelines:
• Start the passport renewal process immediately if you decide to renew it.
• Apply for the permit extensions 3–4 months before their expiry to ensure timely processing.
Thanks very much Miss Bee for your feedback. One more question: do I have sufficient time to get the new permits if I apply for the permit extensions 3-4 months before as the official processing time now is over 170 days? If I can’t get the new permits in time, will it impact my current employment and my child’s school admission / approval? Thanks.

If you couldn’t get new permits and before expiry date of old permit , you will be on maintained status. In this status you can continue working for same employer under same conditions until decision is made on your application.

Thanks Miss Bee. Please advise if I should do the permit extension application and renew passport application in parallel. What’s the best move?

Hi Miss Bee, can you please elaborate a bit what does it mean when I get new work permit, send web form and update them? Do you mean when I received the new passport, then send webform and update IRCC? IRCC then might issue the permit not only extended to March 2026 if I can get the new passport before the new permit issued. Do I understand correctly? Thanks.

@Miss bee
Hi Miss bee, my situation is I already applied for PNP non EE under AAIP (Student stream) and I have accepted new position (Same employer and NOC). Will this affect my application? I believe I have to update AAIP office about any changes with my employment right? Thank you so much.

Yes, since you have accepted a new position, even though it is with the same employer and NOC, you are required to notify the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) about this change in your employment. This is because your nomination and PR application are tied to your job offer and employment details, and any updates must be reported to ensure the accuracy of your application.

Steps to Take:

1. Notify AAIP Office:
Send an email to the AAIP office at immigration.program@gov.ab.ca with the details of your new position, including:
• The new job title.
• A copy of the new employment letter or contract.
• A brief explanation that the position is with the same employer and within the same NOC.
Make sure to include your file number and personal details in the email.

2. Confirm NOC Consistency:
Since your new position is within the same NOC, this change is less likely to affect your nomination. However, it’s important to ensure that the duties, responsibilities, and skill level in the new position align with the eligibility requirements of the program under which you were nominated.

3. Verify with IRCC (if PR already submitted):
If you have already submitted your PR application, you should also update IRCC about the change in your employment by submitting a webform. Provide:
• Details of the position change.
• Proof that the employer and NOC remain the same.

Impact on Your Application:
• Since your employer and NOC are the same, the change in your role is unlikely to negatively impact your AAIP nomination or PR application.
• However, failure to inform the AAIP office and IRCC may result in complications, as maintaining transparency is critical in the immigration process.

@Miss bee

Hi Miss bee, I have a question for you.
I got OINP and my stream is international student job offer.
AR: June 18, 2023
AOR: Nov. 30,2023
and I have been in comprehensive security stream since Jan. 04, 2024.

Now the company that I work for is offering me a promotion and a new job position.
I am wondering if I accept the new position will it have a negative effect on my application?

Thanks

Accepting a promotion and a new job position within your current company generally should not negatively affect your PR application under the OINP International Student with Job Offer stream, provided the conditions of your nomination are still met. The key is ensuring that your employer remains supportive of your PR application and that the company can continue to validate the original job offer that supported your OINP nomination. Since you are moving to a new position, it is advisable to check whether the new role is within the same NOC or is considered a higher-skilled position. This ensures that it aligns with the criteria under which you were nominated.
You should also inform OINP of this change, as they require updates on significant changes to your employment situation after nomination. You can do this by emailing OINP with details of the new position, including an updated job offer letter and an explanation from your employer stating that they continue to support your nomination. Transparency is crucial to maintaining the validity of your application and avoiding delays. Additionally, you should inform IRCC of this change via a web form to ensure your PR application reflects your updated employment information.

If you can renew passport before expiration date , you should renew asap and then apply for extension. If you can’t get new passport, apply extension application with old passport and send copy of passport asap to CIC when you get it . However if your new application is approved before you get new passport, they will issue permit according to old passports then.

Also made a tracker account today that says background in progress and eligibility not started yet.

I'm not too concerned about when I reach the next update but rather what my next update would be.

Would it be PAL? or is that after I complete my background and/or eligibility?

Anyone else with a similar timeline?
Your timeline matches mine. Medical passed on 8th Nov and ADR request on 12th. Reviewing started on 18th After that no update. NO PAL either
