Hi everybody,

I have serious problem regarding NOC codding.

I am a geological engineer and I am recently working as a drilling project manager in the oil and gas business.

I would like to ask that while I am choosing the right NOC code, should I use 2144 which is dedicated to geological engineering or exactly should I use the 0811 which is dedicated for Managers in natural resources production and fishing.

What if I just choose 2144 for drilling project management job ?

If I choose 2144 instead of 0811 is this situation brings rejection?

Thank you very much for your replies from now.

How many years experience do you have in the project manager role vs being just an engineer?

Go for the NOC code for which you have max experience and for what you have continuous employment. There is no NOC quota in EE and to my mind it doesn't matter that much. EE is based on CRS.

But there should be a logical sequence isn’t it? It shouldn’t be just go and choose the relevant one

Logical Sequence yes. I assume you have moved from Engineer to a project manager/management position. So the engineer experience did help you to get where you are. Even if you choose NOC code for Engineer you can show you have graduated/prospered in your career.

Thank you very much for your reply. But I need most robust explanation I guess. As we all know this is a critical issue and any flaw on this subject may cause rejection.

Since you have more than 1 year as a manager, and, as I understand it, are now working as a manager, choose that code, as it best matches your current job responsibilities.

The only crucial thing about NOC codes under the current system is that your job responsibilities as described by your employer MUST match the NOC code you chose. There are NO caps on NOC codes any more, and that is why people used to try so hard to choose a code and manipulate their responsibilities to fit a code that hadn't yet reached a cap. That is not necessary any more, and you can relax.

When you fill out your forms, it is FINE to have had jobs under more than one NOC code. Just make sure that you have 1 year or more experience in the code you choose.

You get more points if you have 3 or more years experience in a NOC rather than only one or two years experience. Also, consider the fact that you may not be able to get a PM job first so you may end up working as an engineer. Given that reality, and the fact that the engineering experience would get you more points, it wouldn't hurt to apply under the engineer NOC code.

Yes you are right I will not get PM job first actually I don’t consider that. The problem is that, if I choose code 2144 ( geological engineering ) for PM work, the job scope will not match with the geological engineering main duties. PM job require more forecasting and management duties.

If system will calculate my point like this; 5 years engineering experience+ 1 year management experience= 6 years NOC experience, that means there is no problem I think

If you had two different jobs with two different NOC codes, enter them as such.

So:

5 years engineering experience --> appropriate NOC
1 year management experience --> appropriate NOC

CIC will not count 6 years of experience, they will either count 5 years or 1.

The good news is that you can choose which experience i.e. which NOC code you want to nominate as the one being counted. There is no rule that it needs to be the most recent experience.

The relevant question is something along the lines of: "What is your primary NOC code that you want to use for your profile?"

I would choose the NOC code corresponding to the 5 year job because that will give you more points.
Thank you very much.
At this point I have another question; What if system does not accept my management job which will be stated under NOC 0811 ( management ) code. What if they think job requirements and my duties are not matching with.

Such as

5 years engineering experience --> appropriate NOC – Accepted by system
1 year management experience --> appropriate NOC – Rejected by system

Is this rejection may affect my whole application process or just management one will not be counted and still engineering experience will be counted and I will keep on.
