Hey guys

I have a physio degree from a reputable university in Belgium.
However, in my final master year I opted to choose "rehabilitation of internal disorders" which includes respiratory physiotherapy for patients with lung disorders, providing training programs for patients with CFS and obesity, and programs for patients that rehabilitate after cardiovascular surgery etc etc. It's not sports physiotherapy or manual therapy like the majority of us chose as a specialisation. So my manual skills need training before I move to any country I guess

What is the content of the exam to get your approval? I bet it's anatomy and clinical reasoning etc.

I barely have working experience since I just left uni. Should I get experience in my own country or is it an easy exam?
It kind of bothers me that just one single exam determines whether someone is capable or not

Hi,

Your first point of call in relation to your course work is to have your qualification assessed by the Alliance to see if you have covered and have enough credits in the relevant areas. The Alliance will do that for you - www.alliancept.org

It is not necessary to have work experience to sit the exam. In fact, the exam would suit new graduates as it is an entry level exam which means you are likely to be relatively fresh with knowledge and materials from your PT training.

It is actually a two staged exam: written/MCQ and clinicals/OSCE and both exams actually encompass all aspects of PT training/practice i.e Musculoskeletal/orthopaedics, Neuromuscular/Neurological, Cardio-respiratory and Multisystems. You will have to pass the written/MCQ exam to be eligible for the clinical.

You can find more information about the contents and construct of the exam on the Alliance link I provided above.

Good luck.

Thanks 9J.
I am currently traveling in Australia (4 more months) and then I'll move to New Zealand for one year.
This is to improve my English, gain life experience and become independent. After this experience it's my goal to try my chances in Canada, the country of prosperity and friendly people.
Assuming that my trip in Australia will end in july 2013, what is the best period to apply for the exam?
My university is ranked highly, as far as there is an international ranking. I should have enough credits for the alliance.
While traveling I can refresh my anatomy etc, but practical skills need improvement. Maybe I should try to gain some working experience in New Zealand but it's my goal to travel to Canada and work there for years. Maybe even become a permanent resident in case it goes well.

What if I pass for the MCQ but don't have enough practical skills yet?
You need to work to get experience, but you need experience to get to work..
I'd like to figure out a way to improve my practical skills asap

Not a bad idea to get some hands on experience if you can along your journey. It shouldn't however be a hindrance for you applying though. Most of the Canadian trained applicants sit the exam as fresh grads. If you have studied at a highly ranked Uni as you stated the clinical aspect of your training should have prepared you for the perquisite skills you need to complete the clinical exam. Moreover, if you pass the first stage exam/MCQ, most provinces in Canada will grant you a temporary/interim licence with which you can work and gain Canadian experience and clinical orientation which should help with the clinical exam.

One word about the Alliance and the credential evaluation: I know you are still out and about and your plans appear to be a bit up in the air at the moment, but if you indeed have the intention of coming to practice in Canada in the next year or 2, start your credentialing process now. It is now taking over 1 year to complete the credential review after the Alliance have received all your documents. Sometimes they may need further clarification or you may have to complete some other courses which may prolong the process even further. Once your evaluation is completed, you will have 2 years to sit for your first exam.

Good luck.

Hello kg,
Alliance processing takes about an year n a half in today's pace. Since you have only got your file number now, u cannot do any courses now. Once the credential evaluation is done, they will send a report and suggest on what needs to be done if you are lacking credits in any area n so. Meanwhile you can prepare for the exams ( list of some books are given by 9j in previous posts)
And since you have already landed in Canada getting some PT exposure will also help lots in the exams.

Experts please advise and help kg if u have any further information!

Thanks,
4can

Hi,

Nice to see you've got a job going, albeit casual. Don't worry, the early days are always that challenging, but with a bit more perseverance, you'll be ok on the long run.

I'll advice you keep applying for PTA jobs. Are you open to relocation to provinces like ON, BC or AB? There may be better prospect for jobs there. Have you searched online for PTA jobs in those provinces? One other thing that may be of advantage: Now that you have a file number with the Alliance, you can include that on your CV and every cover letter that you send to prospective employers. Some employers usually look at long term when they employ PTAs and they may be encouraged if they know you have started your credentialing/licensing process. You may also have to reformat your CV to Canadian style if you haven't already done so.

It will not be advisable to start any study now in anticipation of your credentialing outcome. As 4can stated, you are better off waiting for the outcome of your evaluation so you can make the right decision what you need to do and the best way to approach it. I believe 4can is at that stage now and he's the best person to advice you on that.

My best wishes and please keep us updated

The Alliance will accept a Bank Draft/Demand Draft as long as it is issued in Canadian Dollar. You will not be charged extra by the Alliance as there are no charges associated with clearing the money in Canada. The only charges you will incur is the commission you pay your issuing bank from your own country.

Hope this helps

Hi 9j,

Hope you had happy landing n you are enjoying your initial days in Canada.

Thanks for your reply. I got this doubt in mind as they have specified to send a bank draft NEGOTIABLE WITHOUT CHARGES IN CANADA. The bank from where I am taking the draft here doesnt have a branch there. So this draft money may be collected from another bank. Normally they charge an amount for this. Does the clearance fee u said apply here also?

You may be better off to get your draft from a bank that can guarantee you no charges will be applicable at the Canadian end of the transaction. Ask your issuing bank for clarification on this. The issuing bank don't need to have a branch in Canada (only a few banks do). They do the clearing through an intermediary bank in which they (the original issuing back) hold an account. The name of the intermediary bank will be printed on the draft. If they insist on any clearance fee, ask if you can pay that in advance fro your end. Sending more than the required amount may confuse the Alliance and may delay the process.

I am yet to arrive in Canada. We are landing in 2 days time.
