Okay I am confused about this - both are valid NOC codes - but they only accept applications under 1123?

0124 does not seem to fit into the 50 eligible occupations - but as someone with a background in marketing I would like to apply under 1123. However 1123, even though it is titled "1123 Professional occupations in advertising, marketing and public relations" no where in that list does it actually list Marketing Manager - 5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2011/SearchNocCodeResult.aspx?val17=1123&val18=0&val19=0 How can a Marketing Manager not fall under professional occupations in marketing?

So am I eligible to apply under 1123 even though 0124 Advertising, marketing and public relations managers is really a better description of my background?

I agree.

Your actual duties listed in a reference letter must match with those in NOC description (the NOC under which you're applying of course, in your case 1123). Or at least there must be very high relevance between you duties and NOC description.
Job title doesn't matter much.
