Hey,

I'm renewing my PR after 5 years and I'm gathering my additional documentation but I don't have any tax assessments to include as I haven't been working. I've only been out of the country for 10 days during the past five years and I'm including my photocopied passport to prove that, so I don't think I'm a particularly difficult case to prove, but it still worries me that I can't meet the minimum documentation standards they outline.

So I guess I have two questions.
1 - Has anyone had any experience with submitting for renewal without tax documentation? Is there anything else I can/should include to help?
2 - Is it ever a good idea to include extra documentation they haven't asked for? ie. Hydro bills, lease agreements, etc.

The section I'm referring to is here:
Additional documents of proof of residence in Canada in the past five (5) years

Include the following with your application:

Photocopies of all pages of all passports you held in the past five (5) years (if your stamps are not in English or French, please have them translated, see section on Translation of documents), and
A copy of one of the following:

Other Income Tax assessments issued by Canada Revenue Agency within the past five (5) years, or
transcripts from a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada verifying attendance within the past five (5) years, or
for all school-aged children, written records verifying attendance within the past five (5) years.

Any and all help and advice is appreciated. Thanks!

It's a fair question, and honestly, no good reasons that aren't personal. I'll likely do it sometime in the next year or so, just wasn't ready to do it now.

I applied for the Citizenship Feb. 2014 ...did the exam on June 2014 ..No RQ so far .. but my PR will expire in Jan. 2015 ..so planning to renew it in next month (9 month before expire is allowed) ..but the question is if I submit a proof that I applied for the Citizenship does this help much and considered as a solid proof for residency ?

You could still file for taxes now and wait until you get tax assessment for each year, it shouldn't take too long to receive. I don't understand why you didn't do it from the first place since you could be eligible for tax credits even if you didn't work or had any income.

I just did — hopefully it'll turn out okay. When I was gathering the documents, I called CIC and the officer told me to include my T4 slips, and explain why I did not have a tax assessment (it's my first year filing taxes, I didn't work for the most part I was in Canada and just got my first job over a year ago). I included a letter of explanation, and provided whatever documents I had in hand.

My application ended up being:

- Cover Letter outlining everything that was included and signed by me — I did out of habit, since I have always sent one with every Canadian visa (two visitor visas, and one extension) as well as an immigration application — I made some modifications below to remove private information:

* IMM 5444 (fully completed and signed), IMM 5455 (completed);
* Photocopy of one primary document: legible and clear photocopy of [nationality] passport (valid from [full date] until [full date]) from my landing; immigrant visa and landing stamp can be found on pages [such] and [such]. Certified translation of stamps not in English of French have been provided;
* Photocopy of one secondary identity document: legible and clear photocopy of IMM 5292;
* Photocopy of additional documents of proof of residence in Canada: legible and clear photocopy of [nationality] passport (valid from [full date] until [full date]) and certified translation of all stamps not in English or French; university transcripts (from [all institutions that I have attended in the past 5 years] as well as diploma from [College] and [professional] certification acquired through [an institution] Additional documents provided: letter of explanation, T4 slips, letter of current employment, letters confirming residence, clear and legible photocopy of current lease;
* Two photos placed in a small envelope, with my name and Client ID written on the envelope;
* Fees;
* Legal change of name: clear and legible photocopies of my Certificates of Change of Name issued by the Vital Statistics of British Columbia;
* Additional identity documents: clear and legible photocopies (front and back) of PR Card, driver's licence, and provincial medical services card;
* Travel itinerary and proof of payment (credit card statement);
* All passports I have held in the past five years, accompanied by certified translations of all stamps not in English or French ([passport number] covering years [year] through [year], and [passport number] covering years [year] through [year]); the former can be found under "photocopy of one primary document," and the latter can be found under "photocopy of additional documents of proof of residence in Canada."

I applied for urgent processing based on an upcoming trip, thus the itinerary and proof of payment of trip, which otherwise would not be needed.

When I was talking to the agent, however, I would be told that I need 'this' AND 'this' AND 'this' AND 'this' AND... (the instruction guide asks for 'or') so I included everything I was told. I have only been 67 days outside of Canada in the past 5 years, so it shouldn't be a problem to prove I fulfill the residency obligations. :)

Hi, I know this is old- but I wanted to know how many Notice of Assessments you submitted as proof of residency. Did you submit 5 years worth? I am asking because I never filed for my first 2 years in canada, so for my proof of residency I will only have 1 NOA to submit. Did you get renewed without sending any NOA copies to CIC? what ended up happening?
