Minister Kenney issues statement on Nigerian Independence Day
Ottawa, October 1, 2014 – The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister for Multiculturalism, issued the following statement to recognize Nigerian Independence Day:
“Today, people of Nigerian descent in Canada and around the world will celebrate the 54th anniversary of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“Canadians of Nigerian origin have played an important role in building our country and they continue to make vital contributions to our economy and society. Today, it is estimated that nearly 20,000 Canadians are of Nigerian descent.
“Nigerian Independence Day is a joyous occasion marked with ceremonies, parades, and other cultural events. I encourage all Canadians to celebrate this important day with our Nigerian friends and colleagues.
“As Minister for Multiculturalism, I wish everyone celebrating a happy Nigerian Independence Day.”
