Hello.. My husband and i recently got married in our own country, then we came back to a foreign country where we are working and residing for years..we are planning to apply a Family Class immigrant, me as the principal applicant and my husband as my dependent. My question is..do we need to change our marital status in our every documents like passports, permit of stay, identity cards and other supporting documents? Is it necessary to renew our documents and change our marital status from single to married since we are apllying a family classs/independent immigrant? Thank you.. Please reply asap..

I'm confused. Family class is meant for sponsorship. You need to have either a Candian citizen or Canadian PR sponsor you for PR. If you want family sponsorship, with you or your husband already have to be at least a resident of Canada to sponsor the other. Unless you have a child, over the age of 18, who meets financial requirements, and is sponsoring you as a parents, and your spouse as a dependent of you. If it is just you and your husband and you don't have an adult child to sponsor you in the family class, the. You need to find a different class to immigrate to Canada under.

Im confused also about what application will be fit for us to take.. We are currently working in italy together, and we are planning to migrate in quebec,canada.. My cousins there told me to apply as independent immigrant..but i didnt see any independent immigrant application in the visa section so i just considered that family class is the same as independent immigrant.. We decided to get married last month in the philippines and then came back here in italy..before we apply in any application, we just need to clarify if do we need to renew and change the marital status from single to married..thank you..

Family class is only if you have a Canadian PR or citizen spouse who will sponsor you.

Read through the different programs and see if you qualify under any of them.

You should then ask your questions in the relevant forum. I have no idea if you need to update any of your documents for the different immigration classes.

If I'm not mistaken you have to change your passport if you change your name with the wedding.
In Brazil, for example, I had to update my birth certificate.

Thanks for the response.. I didnt change my name yet..when we got married, we just have the marriage certificate then came back to italy after the wedding using the same last name and not my husbands'.. Just my concern is the need to change our marital status on our documents or not..thanks..

No you do not.
I have yet to change my name and I married almost a year ago....
But how are you planning to immigrate?
Is your husband a citizen/ resident of Canada?
Are you a citizen/ resident of Canada?
Do you have jobs that could allow you to get a work permit in Canada?
Do you have children living in Canada?

Every country and nationality laws are different . Here in Canada your maiden name is always your name and you don't ever have to change to your married name . Also in Quebec they won't even except your married name ..

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and at least 18 years old, you can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada under the Family Class. These can be:

your spouse,
your conjugal or common-law partner,
your dependent child (this includes an adopted child) or
other eligible relatives.

BUT if your work is on Skilled category then you can apply in

Express Entry Program.
check this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/index.asp

or here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/quebec/apply-how.asp since your planning to migrate in quebec

You can change your name during the process but as an applicant I would not advise it. If you are going to Quebec ( at least for your medicare card, I haven't tried the SIN yet) they do it in both anyway as a name change after marriage is illegal in Quebec. The federal stuff you can do in your married name ( as my CoPR is) but the provincial stuff they won't.
