Interesting developments around how we can get our Parents and Grand parents to Canada - permanently.

This Phase 1 of the action plan with 4 steps has a mix of good news and contrasting developments. For example, for those who have already applied for parents/grandparents visa, things may move a bit faster. As well as those wishing to get their parents/grandparents quickly over to Canada, to be united with their families, there is another alternative announced.

A new Super Visa has been announced for Parents and Grand Parents. This is said to take about 8 weeks to process, have multiple entry, valid for 10 years and needs private health insurance to be obtained.

But for those planning to apply to get their Parents or Grandparents on a permanent basis, there is unfortunately a 'pause' for 24 months. Canadians will now be consulted on how revamp the entire program and as per CIC "...to ensure that it is sustainable in the future. The redesigned program must avoid future large backlogs and be sensitive to fiscal constraints...."

See the CIC link for full announcement titled:"Government of Canada to cut backlog and wait times for family reunification – Phase I of Action Plan for Faster Family Reunification
Ottawa, November 4, 2011 — The Government of Canada is taking immediate action to cut the backlog and wait times for sponsored parents and grandparents, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today......."

It does say "up to 24 months", so let's hope for all the people who are hoping to apply soon that it will be shorter!

You are misunderstanding. As of right now, the Parents/Grandparents sponsorship application process is CLOSED. Nobody can apply. They are going to use the 24 months to revamp the program. They will not even consider H&C applications in this category now. Anybody who was in the cue as of November 5th will continue processing but anyone who had not applied yet is out of luck and have to see if and when the program will re-open.

How about the provincial nominations (such as Quebec and Newfoundland) in this category also affected? ???

No. What does that have to do with the Family Class? PNP is Economic Class.

I think that you will find that the "re-vamp" of the program will be a very very low quota, such as Australia. Caps of 1000 for Non-Contributory, 20 year wait for visa, 7500 Cap for Contributory, 24 months wait. Have of the parents children must reside in Australia or NZ for consideration. Cost is approximately $39K per parent.

She was asking about the Super Visa and who would be eligible to apply. But yes, there will be no more applications accepted in this category for either citizens or PRs.

Folks:

In the light of this setback (at-least someone like me who had completed almost all the paperwork and was about 2 weeks away from mailing it to Mississauga) ; the super visa that they are planing to introduce on Dec 1, 2001, looks like even to qualify for that Visa one must have already applied and be in the queue.

My Source: if you go to CBC's website and search for the article with the following heading/caption: "Kenney tackles parents immigration backlog" - By Laura Payton, CBC News Posted: Nov 4, 2011 11:52 AM ET Last Updated: Nov 4, 2011 7:11 PM ET

Look at the video wherein the NDP MP makes a mention of this fact in the video on that page. This is really a major set back.

And to the point of revamping the program after 2 years they might come up with some exorbitant upfront costs to defray medical costs of parents and grand parents as someone above gave the examples of AUS and NZ.

My Source:In the same article above you will find a hyperlink (to your right hand side) that reads "Cut immigration applications to fix backlog, Kenney says - By Laura Payton, CBC News - Posted: Oct 20, 2011 3:23 PM ET

Look at the section that reads "Cut family class applications"

Maybe we should just wait until the announce the rules and applications for the "super visa" ? Then there can be a logical discussion without the guessing what it all means?

Super Visa should be applicable to all parents, whether they have already applied PR or not.

No, you are wrong. After you click "Who can apply" in http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/provincial/index.asp, you would prompt to list of provinces participating in the program. When you click "Newfoundland", webpage would redirect you to http://www.nlpnp.ca/, which says:

The Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) can provide an alternate and quicker entry into Canada. It allows Newfoundland and Labrador to nominate applicants who qualify under provincially established criteria for Permanent Resident Status. The NLPNP offers:

- a quicker immigration process for qualified skilled workers, family members, international graduates and entrepreneurs who wish to settle permanently in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- assistance from provincial program officers who are available to explain the program requirements and processes.

No, there may still be chances if you meet the requirements to sponsor them in Newfoundland through NLPNP:
