O My god, This is pretty Bad Idea, Immigrants have always found jobs with their good skills they have.
Canada always needs Immigrants, skilled ones. I never heard any PR stolen their jobs.
Its the merit that is the key to get a job.
I am sniffing protectionism. This is would be so awful for the Immigration Aspirants waited for Months.

Thanks for posting the article. Canada is not immune to global recession and its impacts.
Any action will be temporary. governments in democracy are by the people for the people. so government will have to take some measures on a temporary basis to satisfy their voters who are seeing job go away. I found Canadian unemployment ( in Ontario 8%) to be higher than US.

similar immigration policies are happening in US, UK and other economies that accept immigrants. it may slow down but will not derail hopes of prospective immigrants.

It looks like this is going to be temporary if it happens, I am not sure if it will be applied only to the new visa applicants or the one already in the line. I am not sure what to say as I am waiting for my medical request, it will be sad if they freeze the immigration at the time when I am so near to the finish line and many like me have to wait until this is over which may take years.

Lets just hope this will not take a long time, first we had to wait for the list to be announced, and now - as we are in the middle of our waiting - trip, we have to worry again about whether or not/ or when we will get to the finish line!!

I would expect a reduction in the quotas for economic migrants, which includes FSW

but this WILL affect all those in the queue as a reduction in quota logically means a slow-down in processing

do the math

say 144,000 quota for one year, equals 12,000 visas issued every month

if the quota is halved, only 6,000 visas will be issued in a month

my take is things will slow down if numbers go down. this is a quota system. if quota goes down for 2009 to 120,000 and they have 200,000 applicants till date from all previous years still waiting for decision, then 120,000 based on priority date will get their permanent resident visas this year and the rest will have to wait till next year or later..

I am not sure whether Canada has quota for number of immigrants by country of origin which is what USA has and that negatively impacts citizens of China ,India, Mexico, Phillipines...

I agree, if push comes to shove then it will effect all of us who are in the line, they cannot just keep taking immigrants as they have limited jobs ~ They are meeting in the end of march to look at the situation, by that time, no way I will get anything therefore if they decides to halt this or slow this down, I will be affected as many others like me.

I think I have to start brown nosing (hard work doesn't work) which I hate to do, just to keep my current job little longer and make it last through recession, I thought I would be out by Oct this year but now I don't see the likelihood of it.

What about prospected immigrants in the blue collar jobs like me who wants to settle in Alberta or Saskatchewan? I know that over 50% of immigrants don't want to live in these areas.

They will be stupid to cut the quota because if they want a quick post-recession recovery, they will need a healthy workforce and there’s no doubt that Canadians alone are not sufficient in numbers to cater for the recovery. Just to mention here that some European countries are in a deeper and (expected to be) in a much longer recession but I was watching a talk show on a British channel last night and although the audience in the programme was against immigration, MPs both from govt: and opposition were defending the idea by saying that there’s a severe lack of ‘skilled’ labour for skilled jobs. One of the MPs clearly said that unskilled British people should not expect the govt: to give them an unfair advantage just for being ‘British’ by giving them all the skilled jobs and stop foreign migrants who have valuable skills from making Britain their home.

And I am not saying here that Canada is immune to the global downturn but protecting their financial and economic system from the influence of foreign elements has proved that there country is way more resilient than the rest of the developed world. Yes, one thing which might cause concern for Canada is Obama’s profound ‘Buy American’ philosophy. After all Canada is one of the biggest exporter to the US!

Thanks,
As of this time it is affecting the temporary workers, less hours of work or even laid-off.
