Hi,
I got passport request today and have my medicals valid till march 20 hence my visa will be till March 20 . I am pregnant and due in april 23.
Will get my visa in hand only by my 6th month.
Planning to have delivery in canada. Help me choose a provice that:
1. Covers pregnancy from day 1 or the earliest
2. Cost of living average/ manageable for a family of 3
3. Finding an IT job asap for my husband

If your husband is into IT, then he should look for jobs in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia or Alberta. Ontario and BC have 3 months wait period for Health care. Alberta allows Healthcare from day 1 for all. Quebec allows healthcare to Pregnant women from Day 1.

Make sure you read about the residency requirements that come with moving to a province to get healthcare. It means that you will have to commit to the province even if your husband finds job elsewhere.

Just be careful. Alberta realizes families are moving to Alberta temporarily to give birth so they have placed some key word in there eligibility criteria

Eligible residents
You are eligible for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage if you are:

  • legally entitled to be or to remain in Canada and make your permanent home in Alberta
  • committed to being physically present in Alberta for at least 183 days in a 12-month period
  • not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a claim of residency in another province, territory or country
  • any other person deemed by the regulations to be a resident or temporary resident, not including a tourist, transient or visitor to Alberta
When you move to Alberta from another province or country, there may be a waiting period before you become eligible for coverage under the AHCIP.

If you move to Alberta from another country, and have an immigration document from Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada, you may be eligible for AHCIP coverage.

Thank u for pointing that out....permanent home in alberta. That sounds like an inconvenience if we find jobs elsewhere after the 183 days and plan to shift. I will look up this further and make calls to some hospitals @alberta. Appreciate it.

Don't call the hospitals. They are not involved. It is the alberta health service you need to call. As I mentioned before they are aware that people land in Alberta to be able to get prenatal care and deliver and leave. Provinces manage their own provincial health budget so they want people to be living and working in Alberta if they pay for expensive care.

Ok will do that. Will clarify how long is permanent home in alberta and other conditions from the @alberta healthcare. Thanks again
They will likely say 183 days but if they know you are already planning on moving at 6 months they can technically postpone coverage. You are not the first person to land in Alberta just to deliver a child and the move to Ontario or BC. The Alberta system and taxpayers don't appreciate being used for their healthcare system. BC and ON have delays in coverage because they are the most popular immigration hubs and want to prevent new immigrants or returning citizens from using the healthcare system as soon as they land when they haven't been paying into the system.

Hi Eunice,
By luck we got visa till oct ,not sure how . So we are not planning to travel until after delivery. But as far as i googled and asjed in various foruns all said alberta ia the hope for such situations. You could try contacting the insurance or hospitals there for specific info. I havent made any calls myself yet
