1. First of all the employer is going to have to obtain a Labour Market Opinion from HRSDC and demonstrate that there are no Canadians/PRs available for the job and the wages meet local levels. Anywhere from 6-16 weeks.
2. Auto Mechanic is a Read Seal occupation in Alberta, so to be eligible you are going to have to demonstrate 9000 hours (I believe) in the trade before you can write the red seal exam.
3. Once you have the approved LMO you can apply for a work permit at London and study permits for the children, or you can apply at a Port of Entry to Canada, if you are from a visa exempt country (UK is one)
You will also need a Police Certificate. If you are not married, but in a common/law relationship, you will need proof of the relations and should complete Notarised common-law declaration and supporting documentation showing that you have been in a common-law. Follow the checklist here: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/united_kingdom-royaume_uni/assets/pdfs/e_wchecklist.pdf

Hello! I am from Alberta. Where exactly are you planning on moving to? I frequent this forum because I employ a foreign nanny. So can't help you with your immigration questions for your mechanic significant other.

But if you have questions about Alberta generally, just let me know and I will try to help.

PS - I live in the UK for a couple of years about a decade ago...LOVED it! But had to come home to Canada after I finished my graduate degree. I have such great memories of my time there.
