You can surely call CRA and let them know about your change in status from Single to Married and give them your date of marriage. Now about the tax savings for having a dependent, not sure if you can claim it yet without a SIN. Call CRA and they should be able to answer this, if not, make an appointment with H&R and see what they have to say.

No need to call. If you have an online profile with CRA, update your information there

I spoke to my HR about this, and her comment was---

"Wife needs to have a permanent status in Canada and a valid SIN to have the TAX savings"

Thanks for sharing this and a permanent status is categorized as Work Permit open or closed, student, PR and or Citizen but not someone on TRV. - Self assumption

Guts,

is there a way I can apply for a work permit for her once she is in Canada?
She wants to work and not to wait at home

No harm in applying but it will be difficult to justify it cuz you will have to get a job first and then only you can get a work permit in Canada. In the forms you will have to mention the UCI number and then go outside of Canada to get the Visa stamped on the passport. Assuming shes coming to Canada on TRV.

If she gets PR then no need of work permit.

She will need to secure job and the company will have to go through LMIA process which is pretty tough.
Unless she is in a very skilled trade.

Aah. I hope she gets the PR soon to relive us from everything. In the worst case, I will file a student visa for her to study

Hi,

Well I filed tax returns for 2015 through H & R block. My wife is here since dec 2015, I updated CRA records online.

Using any online tax return tools; I could not file return coz as soon as I say married on forms; system asked for wife SIN which I dont have coz she is here on visitor visa.

So I visited H & R block and explained them the story, they using their own in house system were able to file returns that includes my wife.

CRA processed the return and refunded me x amount.

In my opinion; you have to go to H&R block, its expensive around 160$ they charged me. but that is the way I found.

Thanks & Regards,
Jul2014

Thanks for sharing but it does not need to go via H&R or others..There are some free software where there is option to advised that wife is not PR and does not have valid SIN and it will process it. :)
