You are right, you don't have to be present. Its good to be there to show support but if you cant make it there's nothing wrong in that. I am sure you have a valid reason for not going like "no vacation from work" and other commitments. All you have to ensure is that your husband is well equipped with the supporting docs like chat history (any form of communication media), call records, pics, emails. They want to ensure that this is legit marriage and both the parties (in this case u and ur husband) are in contact and are genuinely married partners. So tell your husband to relax and be natural.
Another thing is that the assumption that they have everything, yes they might and they may not. The officer might not carry all the papers to the interview so ask your husband to take all that he can so that he goes prepared, remember end of the day you are the one getting the visa so u have to justify everything.
