Need to land in Montreal or Toronto before heading home. Which is better?

From what I understand, I will need to land in Toronto or Montreal before heading to my province of residence.
I realize there is an added form for those wishing to reside in Quebec when we fill out our original visa application, but if I'm just doing my landing there and heading home do I need additional paperwork?
I don't speak French so it won't exactly make things easier language-wise, but I hear Montreal has a nicer airport and my layover might be pretty long so I would rather land there if it's not going to be an added hassle.

My spouse and I don't know anyone personally who has landed at either, so anything you guys could share is more than appreciated.

If you can not speak french it would be best to go through Pearson (Toronto) in Montreal if you don't speak french CBSA can make your landing a little bit more difficult. Even tho its Canada ...Province of Quebec has its own laws that effect things.

Another Option could be Vancouver to do you landing at.

I disagree, I have dealt with CBSA in Montreal and they spoke perfect English. I would recommend choosing the cheapest flight or shortest stop over time.

Either airport is fine, really.

CBSA officer are bilingual so don't need to worried about language.
I prefer Montreal because I feel Montreal isn't traffic like Toronto for landing.

If you are doing your landing for Canada shortest stop over time is not a good idea.. Lines are long and slow sometime through immigration/cbsa having 3hrs minimum may be something to think about.

One consideration if you choose to land in Montreal is that if you don't have proof of ongoing travel out of Quebec, such as a connecting flight, the officer may refuse to land you because you wouldn't be able to show a CSQ (Québec Selection Certificate).

What might be considered proof aside from my plane ticket?
Just so I can have additional on me just in case.
My marriage certificate and proof of my spouse's address?

Yes shortest stop over within reason, OP states that they are expecting a "pretty long" layover which I would consider to be well over 3 hours. But note that if CBSA cause you to miss your connecting flight the airline will get you on the next available seat at no cost. You do not need to purchase a new flight.
