Hi friends.
Me and my husband applied under FSW but our points aren't enough to get us an ITA, and PNP is starting to look too much like a lottery, soooo... I had this idea.
My husband will apply for a 2-semesters postgraduate certificate in Canada. I understand this is usually a bad idea because it will only grant about 8~10 months of PGWP, but - here comes my idea - I'll apply for an open work permit and go together with him, and work while he's studying + during his pgwp period. This should get me at least 1 year of work in Canada, with which we will apply to CEC!
I understand that a 2 year program would be a safer option, but we can't afford an MBA for him and the other ones in his interest areas do not look like good choices so we'd really rather have him do a 1 year postgraduate certificate.

So what do you guys think? Is this a good idea? Good chances of working? Or is it difficult to get the OWP?

It's not a bad idea - however keep in mind there is no guarantee your OWP will be approved.

Also, in order for his study permit to be approved, the program he is planning on taking in Canada must make sense in light of his previous education and experience.

Additionally, note 1 year experince under NOC 0, A, B allows you to apply EE CEC but you'll have a similar situation of low score.

You'll get some points for Canadian Experience and spouse Canada education, but you'll lose some points by age...

The key is to get a job with LMIA to get 600 points.

Anyways your plan can allow both of you to stay and work legally here for a while, so it's a good plan.

Try to find a 2 years affordable program (be sure comply with Student Permit requirements), if possible, to get 3 years PGWP

Thank you for your reply!
The program is related to his field of study so we should have no problems with this :)

Getting a job with LMIA seems very difficult though...
But I'm still 24, I won't lose points by age until a few years from now ;) Getting 1 year Canadian experience would boost my score up to around 500

I second what 'Scylla' and 'Gregor.Samsa' said.

However, the best deal would be to apply for a 2 year program. Reasons:

1. Work Permit for 3 years.
2. You can work for 2 years. More score.
3. You said you'll be working and also your spouse can work for 20 hours during the program then you guys can easily save money for 3 and 4 semester fees.
4. Overall, you'll get a better chance at immigration.

Agreed!

Just try to find a nonew too expensive 2 years program.

Thanks for all your replies.

You guys are right that we would be able to afford a 2 year program (except for MBA and the sorts which are waaaay too expensive). The problem is that my husband graduated from bachelor in Business Administration and he would like to study Human Resources Management. All postgraduates certificates that we found in this area were only 1 year long. I think a postgraduate certificate would be much better for his career than a 2 year diploma which sounds to me more or less like a "half university degree". From career prospects that I read on course descriptions and around the internet, the postgraduate certificate is a better option for his career. This is the main reason why we're thinking about enrolling in the 1 year program --- ??? this is a tough decision.
