Hello all,
I am a postdoctoral scholar in Computer science in Canada. I am not sure at all what NOC code to use for this job. My main duty is research and assisting with the supervision of junior trainees, writing reviews on relevant research papers and occasionally participation in conferences and workshops (No teaching duties).

1) Shall I use 4011 which is for professors and also includes postdocs? The problem is the main duty for 4011 is teaching!
Does anyone has experience with this situation and used a NOC which was accepted?

2) My second question is, I have been holding another postdoc position abroad in the same field before coming to Canada. Duties were similar, except I occasionally did some teaching too.
What NOC can I use for that?

I will really appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Samanta

You are definitely not 4011, you are not a professor.

As a postdoc in biology I put myself as 2121. I suggest you find a NOC related to research or scientist.

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2011/QuickSearch.aspx?val65=research

http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2011/QuickSearch.aspx?val65=scientist

Maybe 4012?

Thanks for the replies.

I think it might be 4011. Although I am not a professor, but postdoc is listed under 4011.
The thing is I am not doing any teaching!

Did anyone have successful experience with picking a noc for Postdoc in Computer Science without teaching?

Bests

Are you a postdoc? If you are one and got your PR under 4011 I would be very surprised, in a good way I mean, since postdoc is definitely not listed under this NOC. All the job titles contain professor.

If all postdocs were professor the world would be a better place for researchers :)

Hi,

"Postdoctoral Fellow" is listed under 4011. Just search 4011 in the NOC website (I think I am not allowed to post links here) and check the titles, you will see "Postdoctoral Fellow" among them.

I am so confused.

Are there any Computer Science Postdocs who got PR and can tell us what NOC they used?

Thanks

Put yourself under NOC 4011 then. I think that this is the best NOC for you.

Just make sure that your employment letter match with the duties indicated. For me the duties match more with NOC 2121 so I took this one.

Teaching is not required if you supervising, giving lectures (some weekly group meetings?) helping with orientation etc. That should be enough to meat most of the duties in 4011.

Thanks,
While selecting the NOC, the duties and responsibilities mentioned in the NOC should be a close match with the actual duties and responsibilities carried out by you at the respective job. You need not match the duties and responsibilities word by word, but the idea is to have the closest match in terms of the spirit of the duties and responsibilities (at least 60%-70% match).

Also, NOC should be selected on the basis of the match of actual duties and responsibilities carried out by you rather than the designation match in the NOC list. If you are not sure of your NOC, write to noc@workingincanada.gc.ca with your job title, duties and responsibilities and educational qualification, they will help you find the closest fit.

While submitting your application to CIC, you can attach the email that you receive from NOC Team.

Generally, post-docs are advised to identify an NOC that that reflects their duties as a researcher in their specific field (as sqid_madoma suggests). That is because most of the duties under 4011 are irrelevant to most post-docs, and in the past, many post-docs who chose 4011 were refused because of the mismatch with their job duties. Regardless of job title, you have to find an NOC that describes what you do.

In the case of "computer science," I'm afraid you will have to specify your specific subfield or area of research in order to identify the NOC.

Thanks everyone.
I had contacted noc@workingincanada.gc.ca earlier, but they did not specify NOC code for me. They suggested it might be 2173 Software engineers and designers (which doesn't really match my duties) and recommended that I do my own research to find it out.
I am going to contact them again.

What is your specific area of research? "Computer science" is way too broad...
