I am an American married to a Canadian. We are filing our immigration paperwork in less than 2 weeks. I know we have to pay the $75 sponsorship fee and $475 applicant fee upfront. Our case is simple with no red flags and don't anticipate a problem but I'm thinking I still won't get PR approval until sometime after the spring of 2016. Would it be a problem for me to pay the $490 Right of Permanent Residence fee around February, 2016? Or, should I just pay it upfront with the other fees? Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

While it's possible that paying the RPRF at a later date may delay your overall processing time, I don't know of anyone [here] that's had any noticeable delays.

If you need to defer it, it's probably best to wait for CIC to ask you for it, rather than sending it in without their knowledge...since they have been known to lose things!

Oh...and you ARE applying with an Outland application, right?!

Zake: How did you come up with that timeline? Even if you were implying summer 2016, that's about 12 months or less from now. As per CIC's website, the processing time at NY office is 39 months for family sponsorship applications.

I believe that most straightforward cases for outland applications for US citizens are processed in Ottawa.. and even though they post 16 months processing time, usually its done much faster (i.e. 6). Just relaying the info I've read on the forums..

That's interesting. Does this apply to straightforward cases of only US citizens or anyone who is legally present in the US?

Good question, and I'm not an expert so I will let someone else take this one.

As far as I know if you apply outland, CIC may either choose to process your application in your country of residence or citizenship. There is some debate as to how much we the applicants can affect that choice. I think you can send a letter detailing your preference but it may not matter. So I guess to answer your question from that perspective is "it depends".

I am applying Outland and from the research I've done on this site, it appears I should get PR approval in a year or less. Obviously, there is no guarantee how long it will take and I'm fine with waiting. Like I said, I have no red flags, genuine relationship with proof, upfront medical and FBI background check already done. From what I've read, my file won't go to NY unless they require me to have an interview.

Thanks Ponga. I'm applying Outland. I'll go ahead and just pay the fee upfront so I won't have to worry about a possible delay.
