I have always been attracted to the Arts growing up. When I was a sophomore in High School, we viewed films for our values and history classes. The movie Schindler’s List (1993) made a strong impression on me. As my growing interest in films flourished, I was able to grasp its relevance to the real world. Film can help us to better understand our own lives, the lives of those around us, and even how our society and culture operate. They can shed light on political and spiritual matters too, and can provide catharsis and perspective and may open eyes to new ways of thinking, feeling and pursuing our lives. It offers an opportunity to translate one’s desire to communicate through story, visual arts and drama in a single medium. It touches the core of the heart and lives in many ways. It can teach us to be good, to sympathise, to have passion and to have compassion.
I graduated high school with an Outstanding Visual Artist award. I decided to start working on a degree in Film Production at university, but my parents discouraged me from doing it because they could not afford to send me to Manila, the only place in the Philippines where a Film Production degree is offered. My father, who was the only breadwinner of the family, was only a jeepney (Philippine jeep) driver. Two of my older siblings were studying in college at that time and in order not to add burden to my family, especially to my father, I followed their advice and decided to take engineering courses instead.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I enrolled in, and was granted a scholarship for, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree program at Central Visayas State College of Forestry and Technology (CVSCAFT is now BISU-Bohol State University) in 2002. Because I was not happy in that degree program, I discontinued my studies in the program in 2005.
I got a job in Manila as a customer service representative at a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) subcontractor. It was my first time in the big city. Adjusting to the fast-paced life was really a struggle for me. I was culture shocked. Working graveyard shifts took a toll on me. I lost weight. My parents were worried and asked me to come back home to Bohol, which I did.
When I regained my health in 2008 I decided to finish university. I was thankful for my experience in Manila because it has changed my perspective in life. I became independent and it also made me realize the importance of finishing one’s education.
With the money saved from working I bought an entry level DSLR camera. I contracted as a photographer and videographer for events such as birthdays, weddings, etc. I worked and studied at the same time to help my parents with my tuition and other fees. That continued after I graduated university. In 2011, I finished the Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering degree at the University of Bohol.
EMPLOYMENT
With the lack of job vacancies in the Philippines, I opted to apply for work abroad. I tried my luck and got hired to work in Saudi Arabia in 2014. On my first contract I worked for 2 years as the secretary of a Project Manager in a construction company (Salman Al-Duhaim Sons and Co.) in Jubail, Saudi Arabia (See page-). The company had an economic problem so I did not sign for another contract with them. In 2016 I applied and got hired as a Support Services Coordinator of Dar As Sihha Unit for Remote Areas Medical Support (DURAMS), a unit under Dar As Sihha Medical Center in Dammam City, Saudi Arabia. The majority of my work assignment was to take care of the needs of our remote area clinics all over Saudi Arabia. (See page—for the Certificate of Employment).
In addition to my regular job, I volunteered to help create useful marketing tools and materials such as newsletters, standees, brochures and promotional videos, and ads for web and print. See page-
