I have always been attracted to the Arts growing up. When I was a sophomore in High School, we viewed films for our values and history classes. The movie Schindler’s List (1993) made a strong impression on me. As my growing interest in films flourished, I was able to grasp its relevance to the real world. Film can help us to better understand our own lives, the lives of those around us, and even how our society and culture operate. They can shed light on political and spiritual matters too, and can provide catharsis and perspective and may open eyes to new ways of thinking, feeling and pursuing our lives. It offers an opportunity to translate one’s desire to communicate through story, visual arts and drama in a single medium. It touches the core of the heart and lives in many ways. It can teach us to be good, to sympathise, to have passion and to have compassion.

I graduated high school with an Outstanding Visual Artist award. I decided to start working on a degree in Film Production at university, but my parents discouraged me from doing it because they could not afford to send me to Manila, the only place in the Philippines where a Film Production degree is offered. My father, who was the only breadwinner of the family, was only a jeepney (Philippine jeep) driver. Two of my older siblings were studying in college at that time and in order not to add burden to my family, especially to my father, I followed their advice and decided to take engineering courses instead.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
I enrolled in, and was granted a scholarship for, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree program at Central Visayas State College of Forestry and Technology (CVSCAFT is now BISU-Bohol State University) in 2002. Because I was not happy in that degree program, I discontinued my studies in the program in 2005.

I got a job in Manila as a customer service representative at a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) subcontractor. It was my first time in the big city. Adjusting to the fast-paced life was really a struggle for me. I was culture shocked. Working graveyard shifts took a toll on me. I lost weight. My parents were worried and asked me to come back home to Bohol, which I did.

When I regained my health in 2008 I decided to finish university. I was thankful for my experience in Manila because it has changed my perspective in life. I became independent and it also made me realize the importance of finishing one’s education.

With the money saved from working I bought an entry level DSLR camera. I contracted as a photographer and videographer for events such as birthdays, weddings, etc. I worked and studied at the same time to help my parents with my tuition and other fees. That continued after I graduated university. In 2011, I finished the Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering degree at the University of Bohol.

EMPLOYMENT
With the lack of job vacancies in the Philippines, I opted to apply for work abroad. I tried my luck and got hired to work in Saudi Arabia in 2014. On my first contract I worked for 2 years as the secretary of a Project Manager in a construction company (Salman Al-Duhaim Sons and Co.) in Jubail, Saudi Arabia (See page-). The company had an economic problem so I did not sign for another contract with them. In 2016 I applied and got hired as a Support Services Coordinator of Dar As Sihha Unit for Remote Areas Medical Support (DURAMS), a unit under Dar As Sihha Medical Center in Dammam City, Saudi Arabia. The majority of my work assignment was to take care of the needs of our remote area clinics all over Saudi Arabia. (See page—for the Certificate of Employment).

In addition to my regular job, I volunteered to help create useful marketing tools and materials such as newsletters, standees, brochures and promotional videos, and ads for web and print. See page-

SIDE PROJECT
When my immediate boss, the Assistant Project Manager, AN, learned about my artistic abilities, he proposed that we work together as business partners. We contracted to shoot for events, food, beauty and fashion films, with his creative skills in directing. See page-
With the help of social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, we were able to penetrate the Bahrain and Saudi market. Most of our clients were restaurant owners and Saudi/Bahraini designers respectively. (See page—for the Social Media links.)

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Our work made its way to the international scene and was featured in magazines both print and online around the globe in Canada, the USA, Germany, Japan, the UK and Russia. See page-

I have also been featured as an accomplished Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in the field of photography in different books and magazines in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and the Philippines. Our work was featured on the front cover of DAYO Buhay OFW magazine (Life of an OFW), top 100 influential Filipinos in the Middle East and top 50 Filipino migrant workers in Saudi Arabia. See page-

WHY STUDY DIGITAL FILM PRODUCTION?
Since I have already fulfilled my parents’ dreams, now it’s my turn to pursue mine. My urge to move closer to my ambition is the driving force behind my wish to study filmmaking.
AN, whom I worked with for four years, is retiring from work in 2025. He proposed that we put up a film production business in the Philippines. He believed that my imagination and dedication can produce astonishing and beautiful results in the future. I agreed to his offer. We applied and reserved our business name called E-T Media Productions (Short for E——T Media Productions, in honour of my late parents) at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the Philippines. ( See page for the business proposal-)
E-T Productions’ objective is to introduce Philippine digital films to the rest of the world, reflecting the rich and diverse Filipino culture through my own film, and help the dying state of film industry in the Philippines by employing different international standard techniques, style and taste.
Seeing our vision translate to a motion picture on screen will be an experience that will prove to be immensely gratifying to creative people like us. These goals will come to life by having an International credential.

WHY CANADA?
In-order for us to compete with the existing film and media productions companies in the Philippines, I believe that an International degree in digital filmmaking will make us a step ahead from our competition. Canada’s film production schools are not only globally competitive but are also known to be more affordable than any film schools in the USA and Europe.

College of the North Atlantic CAD 9,465.00
London Film School£18,094CAD31,054.72

In addition, there are a plethora of successful filmmakers who graduated from a Canadian institution. Prominent directors such as Guy Maddin (University of Manitoba) and Denis Villeneuve (Université du Québec à Montréal) both went to film schools and shared a huge contribution to the film industry in Canada.
The Canadian educational system encourages cross-disciplinary studies and the development of transferable skills and uses cutting-edge technology, especially in digital media.

Also, it is worth noting that Canadian institutes provide a dynamic, innovative and challenging environment in which one can create and nurture the student’s true potential. Canadian qualification will surely be a strong base for boosting my career, building my future and that of E-T Media Productions future as well.

WHY COLLEGE OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC?

I chose College of the North Atlantic (CNA) for many reasons:
Practically speaking, CNA offers the lowest tuition fees for a digital film production program in Canada.

DESIGNATED LEARNING INSTITUTIONAnnual tuition fee
College of the North AtlanticCAD 9,465.00
Southern Alberta Institute of TechnologyCAD 16,685.00
Fanshawe CollegeCAD 18,664.00

With the emergence of video cameras and smartphones, anyone can make a film, but to truly understand the craft and its nuances, there are some things that you can only learn under the guidance of experienced practitioners. In the College of the North Atlantic, they equip the students for a career in the filmmaking business by giving each student conscientious hands-on training. Practical training is extremely important for it accelerates learning, motivates students and increases engagement. Students learn better when they experience what they are learning. They will get to experience working with industry standard equipment and learn professional techniques in various aspects of the filmmaking process.
In addition, students, together with the instructors of CNA, will work on developing and producing a short film and apply what they have learned practically and theoretically. The finished output will then be screened by a public audience. In addition to that, Digital Filmmaking students will graduate with a number of certifications necessary to work in the rapidly growing and complex filmmaking industry.
The College of the North Atlantic makes sure that those who graduate from its Digital Film Production program will have a well-rounded knowledge of the filmmaking industry and gain an understanding of the many unique and rewarding career paths available within that industry.
Also, Newfoundland and Labrador features an inviting lifestyle, which includes a moderate climate, clean environment, rugged mountains and spectacular coastline. Its picturesque sceneries are an added bonus, providing incentive for projects during hands-on training.

GOALS AFTER COMPLETING THE COURSE
Since I have already invested in cinema cameras, I will continue to create my portfolio by producing short films, fashion and music videos while i am in Canada. Having an International degree in digital film productions, I will be able to sell myself and my vision. With that, I can attract investors and clients in my country, who will acquire our services soon after. By starting small, our organisation will begin creating and producing films, series and video content intended for media usages. As the co-owner of E-T Media Productions my objective is to find distribution for digital or analog film or video content. This might take the form of movies, television programming, documentaries, industrial films, commercial or other related work.

Also, since Filipino films have not penetrated the international market, E-T Media Productions’ aim is to recognise Filipino artistry in films, promote our country and its talents globally and empower every Filipino through film development and education. The downfall of Philippine cinema is traced from Filipinos’ exposure to international films rather than mainstream cinema. People from the Philippines prefer the international films because of better editing techniques, cinematography, and story concept, which is why it is difficult for the Filipino films to compete globally. Our mission is to transform and boost the film industry in our country and be known worldwide.

My long term plan, as well, is to impart my knowledge in filmmaking by educating the young generations of filmmakers and help them build up their career in the said field.

DECLARATION
I fully understand the responsibilities of a student in Canada and the regulations on the respective permits. I promise to strictly follow the rules set by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and i will leave the country after the authorized temporary stay.

To further support my application, I have provided all necessary requirements as well as supporting documentation.

My sincere thanks for your time to read and with God’s grace, I look forward to your kind consideration and favourable approval of my study permit.

Sincerely,
Nol85

SOP's should be ideally one page or maximum two pages. This is what i have heard from most of my friends who applied for their visas. Also ,I asked my college and they too asked me to not go beyond two pages.

However, there is not any official guidelines from IRCC that how many pages the SOP should be.

Its just that the Visa officer don't have enough time to go through a very SOP. Thats why it needs to be short and on point!
