Anyone here put ad in Mumbai newspaper for name change. If so which paper did you use and how did you go about doing it whilst in Canada. I saw some papers are asking for Aadhar card but I do not have one as I have never lived there since birth (1981).

Just curious... was your home country india. I am trying to get info on legally changing my name (its in the wrong order) some have said to start at the source with my indian passport then change docs here in canada (SIN PR etc) but your steps say other way.

Sorry for the delay in reply. My father has left for the heavenly abode and I was busy with his last rites.

Yes, my home country is India. To make amendments in Indian passport, you will need to submit a copy of your PR card with the desired name. That is why, I completed all Canadian documents first then moved ahead with my passport.

Additionally, your PR card and passport should have same names if you want to travel.

We have received Copr last week. There are a number of issues(not sure negligible or not)
1. A few cms difference in height of spouse and child
2. Country of issue of passports have been printed as India in Copr.. But originally, the passports were issued from Qatar.

Can we change these mistakes? How long does it take to get the corrected documents ?please reply if anybody has similar experiences

I am so sorry for your loss may he rest in peace. Not to worry about delay in replying.

Just to confirm you r suggesting to change my name legally in canada? my PR card also has my name in the wrong order (COPR, PR, SIN and indian passport are all in wrong order (but the same in all 4.)) all other docs like license bank accounts r in the right order)

This was exactly the case with me. Once you file your first income tax return, you will need to file as per SIN number because CRA will match it with your SIN.

Then, if you start saving in RRSP or TFSA for tax savings, it will create mess with everything. Your TFSA or RRSP accounts will have the names as per your bank accounts BUT CRA will try to match them with SIN. This will be time when CRA decline to register your tax saving accounts. This is what happened with me.

I would suggest you to either keep your bank accounts and SIN with the same names or start legal name change process as soon as possible. Just make sure your passport and PR card should have the same names whenever you need to travel. You will need to follow the process as per the province you are residing in.

Getting Canadian passport will require to first have citizenship. You can either change your name before applying for the citizenship or after. In my opinion, getting it changed before applying for the citizenship is better. In this case, you will never ever need to worry about anything. If you do it after citizenship, then you will need to get your citizenship certificate fixed. In that case, there will be one more thing that will need to be amended.

I want to get it changed before citizenship, but I seem to be facing a lot of conflicting ideas as to what exactly I need to do and it seems more complicating. Im getting so confused. How difficult is it to change the citizenship certificate of a name change? if its only that I need to change then wouldn't that be easier as I no longer need to change my indian passport?

I am not sure about the process and time required to get citizenship certificate amended. Though, cic website is showing 5 months of processing time to get the certificate of citizenship.

I was just following this thread and I came across your posts. I am from BC too and I have a similar situation wherein I need to make name corrections:

As per your suggestion, it is better to start with Vital statistics and then change it in PR Card/SIN/DL+ServicesCard/Indian Passport. Could you please advise if you apply for name change on your own at Vital Statistics? If so, could you please let me know how do I go about this?

I am sorry but I desperately need this done now as I become eligible for citizenship in the next 6 months.

I look forward to your reply.

Yes, I did everything in this process on my own. You need to go to https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/...nges-of-name/legal-change-of-name-application and start your legal name change process in BC.

You will have to get you fingerprints verified and make an affidavit, then mail your application to vital statistics. They will take around a month to issue your name change certificate.

Thanks Keypad,

Could you please advise where you got the fingerprints and the affidavit done here in BC? I can approach them and have this done.
