Odeks my brother,
There is no basis for comparison although all countries have their bad sides. It will be an unfair comparison because naija is still sleeping. Life is different here in all ways, opportunities, education, health care, entertainment, freedom of speech, etc. Just to numerous to list here; but it depends on what you seek.
Naija clothing are still useful, don't dash them out when your time come..summer could be hot and you still need something underneath before wearing jacket in winter. Anyhow, you need them; I have not bought any extra piece of clothing here.

I took almost everything except furniture, tv and vehicle. We had 8 boxes allowed by the airline; that's a lot!
Hi Tito,
1.Could you pls let me know which airline you traveled with? Did u have any stopover at all? I intend going to Calgary and I wish to stop over in UK for a day or two. Pls advise
2. By everything, do you mean all kitchen utensils e.g deep freezer, microwave etc?

soj,
You mean the OHIP form? It can be mailed to you but you have to be there for processing (your picture will be taken on the spot). Pls check around very well about the medical so you don't spend too much money. You can try the midwife route if it's possible but it may depend on your wife's EDD. Calgary will be your best bet if there is no way out in Ontario; you could move to Ontario after the birth of your baby.
Take care..

Sir K,
(1) I always use either of KLM or Air France, of course with stopover in Amsterdam or CDG. There is no direct flight from naija to Canada; Lufthansa may be your best bet to Calgary but you should shop around (thank God for internet). Book online so you don't pay too much if you use travel agent.
(2) No, I didn't take items such as freezer and microwave due to weight and voltage issues. Microwave is just about $70 in Canada anyway and the houses come with refridgerators that has small freezer compartment (though I bought a freezer to increase food storage capacity).

soj,
I forgot to add that even with OHIP, you have to wait for 3 months to get your OHIP card and have health coverage. Not a bad idea if your wife can get into Ontario like 4 months before her EDD; that way her coverage starts a month before her EDD.

I know this isn't the thread of this post, but I just wanted to quickly share my story and say hope is on the way everyone....I applied via Canadian lawyers in August 2005...cause they would be able to ensure a seamless application....yeah right!!

Have only just received forms for Medical some 4 years later.....please be patient, enjoy where you are for now and you'll get a lovely surprise one day when you are least expecting it.

We are now hearing stories of getting Visa's in a few months and although had 4 years wait are no where near prepared for this...Also think our family and friends don't actually believe we are going it's been so long!!

What's for you won't go past you,
Wrong post, bro. Don't derail this thread, it's meant to share experience after landing not about the waiting game.

Tito, do you have an idea of the cost of children school fees. Got 5, 3 and 1 years old children. Though, in Finland, it depends on parent income but not expensive.

My 5 year old is in Pre-school and should start school next year by God's grace unless there is a miracle in this slow process. Can you let me know the general fees for school and day care.

Thanks

Oceana - how does this rule apply to a student visa overstay applying for Canadian Residency while living in the US. If i turn in my paperwork in the US will they refer me to my home country. Have been resident in the US for 8yrs. Aside from overstay - a clean record!

@ tito and soj,

I have applied for PR since February 2007, at berlin office because i used to live in holland. After going through the process, up to submission of documents, which i did last week. I received a letter from CIC, berlin, that they cannot continue proceesing of my application as i am not a national of germany or netherlands, and i had not been admitted for at least a year before my application. It further stated that my application will be sent to accra office. Now, i am so devastated, as i do not know if accra office will just continue with the processing as i have submitted all my updated documents and also paid all government processing fees, or it will place it on a queue, again.

How long do you think the whole process will take, as i ought to have been finalised within the next 6 months, if it were to remain in the Berlin office.

Thanks for your anticipated answers.

Apologies to posters on this particular thread, i do know this wasn't addressed to me, but i would like to shed some light on this as someone who's had a first hand experience of the mis-application of the rules. This part of the one year residency requirement has been misinterpreted by CiC many times. This is what the rules actually say

"R11(1) requires that all applicants for permanent residence (other than applicants who come
under Part 8 of the Regulations – Convention Refugees Abroad and Humanitarian Protected
Persons Abroad) must submit their applications to the visa office responsible for:
• the country where the applicant is residing, if the applicant has been lawfully admitted to that
country for at least one year; or
• the applicant's country of nationality, or if the applicant is stateless, their country of habitual
residence other than a country where they are residing without having been lawfully admitted"

The issue here is that Visa offices often misinterprete "lawfully admitted" to mean the applicant must have resided legally for over a year, whereas what the manual explicitly says is that the applicant must have been given lawful admission of over a year, hence Mr XYZ can apply in his third month of his two year work permit in say - UK for example. The deciding factor is the length of admission stamped onto the applicants passport. So, it all depends on how long you were admitted for in Holland, and on what basis? If it was as a visitor, then CiC has taken the right decision;if it was on some sort of work permit of a year plus, then u might have a leg to stand on. But the bottomline is that either way, it won't be that easy to ask them to send back your file to Berlin, since you are no longer resident in Holland. Most of the checks will have to be done by the Accra office for what CiC calls Program integrity reasons.

To your last question, the procedural manual says that files being transferred to other visa offices have to maintain their original application date as their lock-in date, so you will be squeezed in to the Accra queue as at the time you applied in Berlin, which means that you'll be on the same level as those that applied in 2007 in Accra, and that is just no good. Two people i know suffred the same fate from london visa office, but it worked out in their favour cos they got their PR in 6months from Accra, but thats under bill c-50 - the new rules.
Have a look at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/op/op01-eng.pdf for more information about this.
And lastly, if your occupation happens to fall among the list of 38, i would re-apply under the new rules if i were you, and see how it goes. It is allowed to have two applications running at the same time, and you will be notified to withdraw one when you get to the finals of whichever file gets processed quicker. This suggestion is on the basis that funding wouldn't be an issue for you, cos I do know that it is an expensive venture.

Neyo,
Canadian public elementary schools are free, no fees to pay. Daycare cost money and can be pretty expensive but it varies so you have to check with the one closest to your residence. Kids don't start elementary school until they are 6 years old, so you have 2 of your kids in daycare!

Thanks Tito, exactly the same system with the Finnish education, except the daycare stuff. Thanks, hope you are coping with the weather. We are in +1 right now. The irony is just that , u never get used to cold, we are just enduring it.
