Hello!
I've just worked out my first resume to find a job in Canada. It would be great if you could check it and maybe give me some feedback/suggestions. I just copy/pasted it, so don't give attention to the design. I don't know if i used the best action words and it seems i used words like "proficient" to many times?
I need a resume for IT positions (systems adminstration, engineer etc.). You will probably find the one or other wrong expression or grammar failure, I would really appreciate if you would mention them to me.

That leads me to my second question, are there forums out there especially for such things like resume rating?

And last but not least, if i apply on a entry level position, how do i explain that i know my experience is to high for it, but in fact that i just need a job, the level of the job as well as the payment of it isn't that importent for me, without selling me to cheap? I mean, I would really be motivated to apply for an entry level position to get experience working in canada and work my way up. And i really prefer an entry level position in the it instead of any kind of survivel job.
Excuse me for eventuell misspelling, worked hours on the resume and i just need a bed now :).
Thanks in advice for helping me out

Your work experience is quite extensive and, I think, will make you highly employable, but as a casual reader I saw several errors (in spelling, parallelism, syntax and editing)...so proofread carefully and polish, polish, polish. I also suggest deleting Games and Movies from your interests (which is misspelled and won't be caught by the spell checker), but leaving the 3D graphics stuff because that is unique and interesting.

Two specific suggestions which I include for your consideration

Proficient writing properly reports, technical documents to assist users as well as write documentations of the systems configuration. I think you should say... Proficient writing formal reports (or at least properly writing reports), technical documents to assist users, and systems configuration documentation (no period)
• Proficient keeping viruses, male- spyware, and all kinds of security problems away from systems (too informal in style and did you mean malware not male?) Proficient preventing, detecting and resolving a wide variety of security issues including mal/spyware and viruses

Best of luck. Allison

Thanks for the great feedback Allison,

That's exactly the info I'm looking for. I only mentioned games and movies because the job posting I used as reference was for a position at a games studio. You said it's missspelled, what would be correct?
AND, nearly the importest question for me is, how can i tell the company that I would take a position even if I'm overqualified, without selling me too cheap? I don't want to work for a ''slave'' payment, but I probably will work for lesser then others, because my first goal is to get Canadian work experience and not getting ''rich''.

Thanks very very much. Relocating to Vancouver on July 13, I'm so excited!

Hi Lyco,

Your reasoning makes sense regarding the games and movies given the position. The misspelling I noticed was in the section title PERSONAL INTERSTS (interests). Unfortunately, spell check does not scan words in all caps. If you would like more help with editing, syntax, etc (not content) send me a PM. I am pretty good at phrasing and catching errors.

Your question regarding over qualification is a good one and common for many new immigrants entering the job market. I have no great pearls of wisdom for you. I think your best bet is to stress your interest in the work and in starting your career in Canada. If the company can't offer you a living wage, I would suggest you consider negotiating for salary or a scheduled opportunity for advancement, and if necessary turning down the offer.

Good luck. Allison
