Oh wow .... thank you Q for posting this and looking it up. I didn't know this.

A friend I know who 's been working and living in Toronto for a year on a work permit visa and returned to his home land two months ago, is now applying through PNP for Quebec and I suppose he should know about this as I know for certain that he is only using the Quebec PNP to land in Canada and move to Toronto as soon as possible, same day actually.

I suppose if he doesn't know about this, his visa will be revoked and he 'd be deported.

That will be terrible.

No worries, Charlotte.

It does seem like they don't like it one bit when people say they're going to one place, only to, once they get residency, go to another.

This is also because they are now trying to minimize the number of new immigrants regarding the slow recovery process of the quite fragile Canadian economy.

Also because Toronto and other major cities are such magnets for all while other cities are as good as these and have jobs available for those who seek them.

I got my very first day off today and gosh I am exhausted...I 've been sleeping in for almost the whole morning and early afternoon.

I wake up and check my bank account and wow, they 've paid me like 178 $ for at least 8 days of working on a row! ??? I was shocked and almost chocked my lunch.

Have been immediately going to send mails to those I know as I still have no salary slip or a pay stub received by Mail or E-mail, aside of the fact that they do a direct deposit to our bank account, so my friends, all of whom Canadians and working, telling me that it might be due to the differences in they pay roll back and the starting working week for department stores and/or in retail sector, that they now have paid me just half of what I am supposed to receive per full week or a bit more or less than a few days. So let's hope that is the case or I can't hardly make the ends meet while I thought I 'd be able to at least pay the rent. :-X

And while I am working so hard that just in like 10 days at work, I 've my own "clientele" coming and asking for me and my advice!

My supervisor has introduced me to the General Manager of the store and also I met the Marketing Director who was happy with my "advice" and things I did notice which he didn't himself! ::) and I hope/suppose they might want to keep me even after the season.

The other day I made a remark about me loving to work on a different floor and in a dept where I like their stuff and I was surprised yesterday to find out that I wasn't schedule for work ON that certain department for the whole next week! ;) So, I better do it good there too.

Co-workers are all fine, there are two who are not that fun and kind of "spying" on me and sure are jealous and dislike my presence, but I made them more jealous by my new schedule and the special attention I receive.

In the meantime, what I do is to be (as I am by nature) protective and really kind and fun to all my new and other "seasonal" co-workers and kind of taking a few of these new young girls under my attention and give them pep talk and help them put aside their fears and not be shy and just go for it. This way I help them to be "strong" and "confident" and also create a fun friendly more than just " colleague" environment as to be a real team and so whoever with any bad intentions can be left out and immediately traced and taken aback! :D Well, believe me, in that sense, I am not only very kind but also FEROCIOUS!

And the girls all like me a lot and I like them too and we try to help each other and teach each other things we know.

I am also introduced to many of the other floor managers and I suppose I may stay there even after the holiday season, unless I will go looking for a job at other department stores or hotels or just keep looking for an office job.

A gay friend of mine has been so helpful to look for jobs for me while he is at work and has time to spend and he forwards me the links and tells me how to handle them, but sadly I don't have time to send out resume and/or letters. This is the first time I log on here after I started to work.

I do now understand why it is so important to have a Canadian Job experience... because things work out differently and may not seem the same.

The hierarchy is totally different than what I am used to in the Netherlands where the boss/employee relationship for example is much more closer and people have more time to interact or speak to each other.

Here, it seems as if those who do the "office" work, do disappear a top of a pyramide like Illuminati who you hardly see or notice and have "air" and all the power to " send you home" at any given time for any given reason while in Europe, at least in the Netherlands, things are not so easy and the boss is closer to you and you see them more often and everybody is practically similar and doing the same job.

But also the rules, the communications and all are slightly different and I can tell that for thsoe who come here from Non western countries, not used to the culture here, it is definitly important to adjust and acquire such job experience.

But people are nicer and those who work hard, are noticed fast and are recognized too which isn't the case in many other countries where it doesn't matter who you are and what you do as long as you you just keep your voice down and hide your talents and do just the job and go home.

Anyway...

I will update more sooner or later again ...

Have a great time all of you ...

Cheers,
C

"I do now understand why it is so important to have a Canadian Job experience"

I bet a lot of people here (including me) would love it if you could elaborate on that as you learn more about it.

It seems this elusive "Canadian job experience" thing is really vital to getting work there, and I and I'm sure many others have wondered why it's such a big deal.

Oh I am so busy right now working and volunteering, I hardly find free time to contribute more to this thread but I do promise to update all of you with more soon.

I really truly believe that there is a sort of different work culture here in Canada. Those of you who have been working/living in New York or any of other big American cities, won't be shocked much or need to adjust at all, but those like me, from Europe or elsewhere, sure need to learn a lot and get used to some differences regarding "multi-culturalism", the "hierarchie" and the way people, supervisors etc do treat each other. I am doing it very good right now and am receiving a lot of credit and good compliments from many and even my own supervisor, people told me that I can easily in near future climb the ladder as I am noticed, but I don't know. Off course, studying and being certified according to Canadian rules and having a better paid job is still on top of my agenda.

The pay is Ok, but not enough to pay my rent. But it is still and at least better than " nothing". :D

Right?

Less sleepless nights eh?

...

About Scotia Bank, I can tell you all one important thing: If you open an account with them, don't forget to open a TFSA (Tax Free Savings Account), you can have ONLY ONE account per SIN in Canada and maximum of 5000$ a year as fund.

With the available fund you can buy Gold and/or Silver (coins/bars) etc and add to your account and as investement using ScotiaMocatta and Scotia bank is the only bank in Canada that offers this option. So, if you are new immigrant and would like to "invest" wisely, perhaps Scotia Mocatta is an excellent start. We all know that due to the huge budget deficit of USA and the manipulation out there plus the steadily and increasingly deteriorating markets across Europe, but the also growing new bubbles " Education bubble related to student loans"! , Gold and Silver can only go up and make it a profitable investment. So, do your math and be wise.

...

My supervisor is teaching me some details personally and everybody is telling me that she is going to keep me even after the season. We will see ... if not so, I 've done an excellent job with excellent refernece which is so necessary to find any other job in Canada especially having the 3rd important insider at the company as my supervisor! ;)

I also do volunteer and they now want to see if I can start help with office work which sure I do miss! just sitting in front of a PC and do the "boring" job I was always complaining about during my life span and which I now " oh so much worship!" ;D believe me, if you 've to run around a BIG department store, NO SHOE can ease the pain and agony in your feet!

...

Then this ... something I personally find funny and would like to share.

EVERY DAY before going to work, I watch CBC News, what I notice: Vancouver is really a city with a high crime rate in comparison to Toronto.

I only hear Vancouver and then Montreal being this or that, facing this or that, now Gang Wars in the streets and even in their posh neighbourhoods etc, so well, I wonder if those of you who want to go and live there, are wise enough to raise a family in Vancouver!? ... you better think twice before go and spend your money in a city that is CONSTANTLY in the news and in a negative way too.

Calgary is safe, but maybe boring, but believe me, they now have such a lovely mayor who will sure sooner or later give it a new "glance" and a new flair.

I love Toronto , but miss "nature" !

Ok gotta go ... Too tired now .

God Bless you all

Once again, your writings help many to understand a bit of the many hurdles we are going to face. What´s really interesting about you is your desire to share all the experience in this forum... I will send you my three kids for a week to make your days a bit crazy... ;D

BTW, If I were you, I would copy all these writings and make a diary for you to read one day... 10-20 yrs from now.

Have some rest... God Bless you..

:p hey, what a good idea indeed... "Charlotte's diaries" like Bridget Jones but in a totally different concept, place and situation. :D

At least it will be a real diary eh?

Three kids? :) God bless them.

We should all keep faith and really try our best. ... I also forgot to mention the team in which I work. It looks like a "kindergarten", one team never works, the other team works hard and never complains, but is suffering behind the scenes. What I did?

I talked to the supervisor and she told me that as long as nobody does "complain", she can't do anything and it is up to the team B to address team A and discuss it with them first. So, I faced team A with what team B is going through and in a way that only I can do!

I kept the peace and gosh, believe it or not, before closing time and me going for home, I saw this girl who was crying and suffering yesterday for the misery caused by team A, was cheerfully laughing and having fun with team B!

What I did??

I gathered them all together and told them that we are not each other's enemies, we are not here to play around and do nothing, we are here to work, put the customer on top of our agenda and only Client receives all attention and priority required, once there is none, we have time to go and hang out being lazy, if we don't do the job appropriately, we will lose clients and so we will lose our income as the only outcome will be begging for jobs elsewhere and that we should just back up each other and both WORK and HAVE FUN!

Ah well ... no wonder supervisor wants me there, so I can 'manage" all these young funny girls.

So, don't worry, 3 kids or 6, I manage them all. :p

Charlotte, you're a trooper! I'm so glad you've started this thread. I started reading it today and couldn't stop until I reached the end!

I, too, am a woman moving to Canada on my own in 8 days! And I gotta say, you're posts have been so enlightening and have given an honest and real picture about what I can expect and how to prepare for it. Thanks! By the way, you've got a winning attitude and you remind me of myself! Ha ha! :D When I read your stories, I can almost imagine myself in your place, cuz that's exactly what I would've done!

Being positive, looking on the bright side and yes, a damn good smile goes a long way, doesn't it?! ;D

Just curious - what kind of reference letter did the volunteer group require from you from your previous employer? What information did they want to see on it exactly? (I want to get this done for myself before I leave.)

I really hope to see more posts and updates from you!

Chin up!

Drea
Thank you Drea ... I am sure you will be just fine as long as you just know what you do and how to "organise" things! :)

My most important advice to every new immigrant to Canada is: learn to organize your schedule and be patient and NEVER lose faith. Hang on and be good.

The volunteer coordinator didn't ask for any reference letter, but for phone numbers and email addresses. So I gave them the email addresses of my previous employers, managing director and HR people who I know and who know me. What you can do, if you don't have any, just ask a friend who really knows you well and preferebly in an independent way, to help being your reference. It is no problem.

You can ask the friend to bring it up and pretend being your previous employer because I was told this myself a few days ago at work. A few people at work told me that when they were looking for jobs and because they were either laid off or had to leave due to personal issues, mobbing at work etc, they simply ask a friend to pretend being their reference.

Honestly, I won't suggest that and it won't be fun to lie before starting to either work or volunteer, but then again, if it suits you best and is for your best will, given anybody starting afresh anyway, who cares! ... just give them a reference and you be good, but really start afresh too and be a good example of how it should be and how it would be. right? ::)

I suppose most employers here know that this is the case and this is why they rather see the applicant in person and/or give the jobs away to those they are referred to by colleagues, friends, family which brings us back to one of my previous posts in which I stated the importance of good networking skills.

Anyway ... am glad to hear I can inspire you and am sure you too soon will be able to start your own thread and venture through life.

The point of the article is that you'd better go where you say you're going to go. Apparently CIC really doesn't like liars.
