All what I commented only relate to TORONTO and what I learned from my experience. It's not for any debate. If you have different opinion, you can express it, but what I wrote remains the same. Thanks

Weather
Always remember the winter (November to March) is the toughest time in Canada. According to Toronto Star, since 1885, this winter was the coldest with 27 days' acute weather warning (up to -30-35). So choose the right time to enter Canada and be prepared to face the freezing cold. Don't bring any winter clothes, they may not sustain in the extreme. They are all available everywhere. I really hate this time. Everywhere you can see snow and only snow, trees without leaves, walkways covered. The wind always chills the cold too fast. By March third week spring starts you'll get warmer by June.

It does not say Toronto here..it says Canada, same goes for my comment

Hi friends,
At last I have made up my mind to share my life experiences in Canada for the last 7 months. I don't wish to discourage or encourage any body waiting to land.
Hi dear forum friends,
I don't know if some of you still remember me. However here is my time line
Appln filed: April 2010
Medical: January 2014, Visa: February 2014
Landed: July 2014
Noc: 4131, VO: NewDelhi
This is the first time I log into my account since I landed in Toronto, after 7 months. There are a number of reasons behind it. I was not sure what I should share, I found reality was entirely different from what I dreamt and I thought my experiences may not be encouraging to those waiting with great dreams but don't assume that it was that bad. Better you be the judge
Whatever they are, here I would like to share my experiences in brief with a wish it may turn an eye opener to at least a few. As many of you I too had waited more than 4 years to fulfillment since my application. During those years there were several times I lost myself, felt like end of the world and of course a few happy moments.
I landed in Toronto Pearson Intl. Airport all alone after a prolonged, tiring journey of 21.15 hours, just after one stop in London Heathrow. Landing was not smooth, only a few counters were open, waited for 30 minutes, and then had my “confrontation” with my immigration officer, because he found some discrepancies in my file about my previous work history. So, my first advice is: be always truthful with whatever you state/document or submit with the visa office. They always cross check every minute detail in our file. It doesn't mean that I was otherwise- there was a little further clarification about my job, they put aside to be cleared at the time of my entry/landing. After one hour with the officer, I could hear the words “WELCOME TO CANADA”
There was nobody waiting for me to receive, so I took a taxi to a hotel near Toronto airport where I spent 5 days. Meanwhile I searched for a room using KIJIJI and I could find one for $700/month, because it was a spacious basement with kitchen, laundry and wash. Now the real ordeal begins-the hunt for a job. I had not much strategy- may be my optimism dropped day by day as I realize the facts, though I was prepared to do any survival job with a number of different resume in hand. I spent too much time online, went directly to shops/ malls/restaurants/hiring agencies/new comer support employment agencies and what not. Then I realized my weak points which are to be discussed seriously.
1) Language: It is not easy to understand and respond with different types of pronunciations/slang
2) Experience: Every employer looks for Canadian experience- they just don't care what degrees we have or how much experience we have in our native place. They just look for the apt person, who they think will do the job exactly as they wish.
3) The work culture: Here the work culture is entirely different from India. Work means work, no free time just 30 minutes exact break in 8 hours shift, have to work every second, and no passive seconds, no chatting, no music. There are 3 shifts- day, evening and night, its round the clock. The minimum pay per hour is $11 assured
4) The field of work: It is very important. If you are in the IT field or any technically qualified, I think its easy for you to find a job. Look at my NOC, I was a college Asst Professor back home with more than 15 years' experience which I always hate to say to anybody here.
5) The Living Expenses: Here a coffee or tea costs you at least $3, a small breakfast 10. The rent minimum is $500 for a single room with shared bath. Its for a single person, not for a family. Canada is far more expensive than U.S or most of the countries.
It's time for me to leave for my work, so will continue when I get time
thanks for sharing this valuable information.

Second Part
Thanks for all your responses. Here I am posting only what I have learned or experienced. Others may have different experiences. So, please take it that way. I don't need any +1 please
What I share is just my observations and experiences and with the objective to throw some light into what you are going to face. So, no controversies please. I wish you all success and great future in Canada.
During the first week of arrival, I managed to get a bank account with TD Canada Trust, which has more ATMs and branches all over in Ontario. Got my SIN- you just go to a “Service Ontario Center” and fill some forms, that's it. Upon landing I applied for PR card at the airport and it was delivered to my home address after 45 days. No big issue.
Now it's time for job hunt. Spent hours on online search, sent resumes but the responses were very limited. Who dares to hire a new comer without Canadian experience or education while hundreds stand on queues with all their requirements/qualifications. The interesting thing I noted is for every job fair, there are lot of jobless people, everywhere. Yes Toronto's unemployment rate is very high. Somehow, on the 15th day of I arrival, I managed to get job, entirely strange and new with minimum pay. I knew the start is not at all easy; it's really hard and need lot of enthusiasm and perseveration. Meanwhile I continued the search, attended a few interview with banks, offices (administrative positions) and some multinational companies
Work environment:
The Canada's work environment, I think, is entirely different. As I told you before, many offices, companies, outlets and coffee shops work round the clock, with 3 shifts. Every second is counted, no frequent breaks or leisure time and chit chats, always monitored by surrounding cameras/cctvs and supervisors. It's really tight. No guarantee for work, you may get an envelope with money for work at the end of your shift and a word “you'll get a call from the manager”- which means you are fired. The important thing that I learned from my experiences is we can't predict the behaviour and can't make sure the 3 ws in Canada-“Work, Women and Weather”
Another important thing you all should take care of is getting a driver's license. The people with minimum driving experience in India have more chances to get the Canadian Driver's License easier. Because here the roads, traffic rules and roads are entirely different. Canada really deserves an appreciation about her roads and traffic rules- they are almost perfect and praiseworthy. Here there are number of drivers' licenses starting with G1-written test, you have to score 80% in two sections-traffic rules and signs. Then G2-it's a road test for 15 minutes in rural and urban roads. If you pass both you are qualified for G license (highway test). It's not easy to get through all tests, really tight, because the licensing system is operated by a profit oriented private company “Serco DES operating as DriveTest, is a private company licenced by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario” http://www.drivetest.ca/EN/Pages/default.aspx Driver's license is an important photo identity card, and life is really difficult without a car due to the extreme climatic conditions. NOTE: Remember to bring your previous driving experience/driving particulars in official letter head, which would help you to qualify directly to “G” after G1, otherwise G1-G2-G. Don't go to the test without sufficient preparation and practice, appear only when you are 100% confident, because it costs you lot of money and time. Here everybody obeys traffic rules contrary to our place, so, if you make a mistake it costs so much!!!
Will continue

Thanks for the information!!

Any advice to get started before we land in Canada. Specially from job perspective

I think the poster meant well for people coming in..he wrote his experience to help new comers be aware...instead of looking for something in his write up to criticize why don't you take take time to write your own experience of BC as we have other new comers heading to Vancouver..don't you think it will help too instead of coming here to back talk someone with good intentions.Sit down and write yours.

Dear All,

I agree that "TO DREAMLAND" is just trying to help others and giving some sort of info. which
we all can benefit for sure and it is all his personal experiences. I feel all new comers or who
have settled already give more input from their side so that other people can benefit.

I agree that we all think Canada is like landing in heaven but it is not the case and it obviously
will take sometime to settle in and get into the grove.

Please keep sharing for everyone's benefit.

All the best & God bless!!

Writing personal experience is beneficial, however, he/she shouldn't confuse our readers by saying things that isn't true for all of Canada - as I mentioned in the previous post.

But where in your previous post that I quoted, says this relates to Toronto? You said Canada instead. Don't deny it!

We all know that Toronto Star is a newspaper. So as Vancouver Sun. :D

@ gentleiphy: I suggest you sit down and read the whole thing again!

Sure, I have nothing to hide. We came to Vancouver 2 years ago. After spending 9 hours on a flight from Zurich via Frankfurt to Vancouver, we got through customs and immigration withing 30 minutes. A friend drove us then to our rented and furnished apartment on Pacific Street.
The first week in Vancouver we used for getting the SIN card, bank account, driver license exchange etc etc. We have been to Vancouver before several times, so we knew our way around quite well. The second week we bought a truck and did go for daily trips around the lover mainlaind and up to Whistler.

The third week I started applying for jobs in my line of work, hotel management, and the 5th or 6th email got me a phone call and an immediate interview. Went there and got hired on the spot, full time and benefits (no survival job). The next day I got some more calls, but obviously had to decline these offers.

Started work on the 4th week and the rest is history. In the meantime we moved to New Westminster into an empty apartment because our furniture arrived. My wife also works full time in customer service for a Canadian company.

We both did not encounter any problems so far, all went smooth and plain sailing. As said somewhere before, we are both white Europeans and familiar with the lifestyle and culture, it was not challenging to us.

So yes, here is my story. Probably not typical to what others experience, but it is the truth, we love it here and have no desire to go anywhere else.

Thanks for sharing..you have done well,we now have read your own story and experience and that gave an insight too that in Canada newcomers should expect both side of the coin..meaning it can work well at first start and can also take time to work well....everyman to his own destiny. Thanks for sharing
