Moving in September - Vancouver OR Toronto ? Consulting Jobs

Hi Friends

Well we are moving to Canada in September. We already landed in July last year and have our PR cards etc made in Toronto. Now we're moving permanently in September as I'm pregnant and due in December and we'd like the new life to start in Canada. My question is whether we should go to Toronto OR Vancouver. My husband will be primarily looking for work in consulting roles. He has nine years of experience here and is an MBA. Given the winters , does it make more sense to move to Vancouver instead of Toronto. We have a lot of family in Toronto but mostly in blue collar jobs. We have a little family in Vancouver too so that's our second choice. Does Vancouver have consulting jobs? How easy or difficult could it get for us in Toronto vs. Vancouver in terms of job chances. I'm a finance (private equity) professional but will start looking for work only after giving birth to my baby

And meanwhile adding another question!!
Do we really need to send customized cover letters to each job we apply to? I usually ignore the cover letters and only send my resume esp if its a linkedin and online applications?

If I'm sending emails, I mention a short cover note summarizing my experience and my interest for the role but skip the word doc cover letters in case of online and linkedin applications (I feel they would be more interested in my resume than the perfectly worded cover letters) .. Anyone who knows the recruitment process frm inside , please let me know if the cover letters are actually read and given their importance.. or the resume should speak for itself (that I believe)

It would probably help if you were more specific about the type of consulting your husband does. Just saying "consulting" is pretty broad...

I would always include a cover letter. Your email may not be passed on to the person who is actually selecting candidates for interviews - and that would leave them with just your resume. I typically interpret a lack of a cover letter as a lack of a true interest in a job. The message this sends to me is that someone is sending out tons of resumes to any job that remotely matches their experience/capabilities and can't be bothered to customize a cover letter. When I'm looking to hire - I'm looking for someone who specifically wants to work for my team and who specifically wants the role I have posted. I am not interested in someone who is sending out tons of resumes for any job that is remotely suited to their capabilities.

Interesting Scylla. I always advise against cover letters (I have never sent one). I typically interpret a cover letter as a way of trying to sell me something that their resume lacks. When we look for a hire we want the resume to speak by itself, if the resume can't do it then a cover letter won't for sure. Of course, as you mentioned, we want someone who at least knows what they are applying for, so we ask this during the interview.

Maybe this changes by job area. In IT an openning paragraph is more than enough (and I usually just ignore it, but that's me).

He has worked with consulting firm in the past on global projects and also served as internal consultant in one of the leading telecom operator and Insurance company in India. he has around 9 years of work experience
