Hello everybody,

I'm being sponsored by my boyfriend, and my mom is writing a letter about our relationship, about that my boyfriend and I are genuine and that are relationship is continuing.

But now I"m not sure what to do with her letter. I guess she has to sign it?
And do we have to take it to a notary to get it certified?
And if yes....does my mom has to take it to the notary (since she wrote the letter and signed it?
Or can I do this?

Oh, that's a bit inconvenient.
Yes...but the notary has to see your mother sign and she will need to bring identification with her....preferably photo ID.

It depends what country you are applying through as not all countries require notarized statutory declarations from family/friends that the relationship is genuine. In my personal case we submitted around 5 letters or so without any declarations because it was not necessary.
Check your country guide to make sure

We also applied common law and I've checked the quide for the Netherlands and they have to be statutory declarations. Very wonderful, I already knew this was going to give trouble specially for my dad who didn't want to lift one finger for me my whole life already.
I talked to him over the phone and he finds it all inconvenient and BS, and he's probably not going to do it for us.

My mom probably will (mom and dad are divorced), but it would be better if there was also something from my dad, since my boyfriend doesn't have any contact with his family.

Besides that it's usefull it would also be nice to know that he finds it important enough to only do this for me.

It would probably be best to get someone who you are close to who is aware of your relationship and maybe someone who knows your boyfriend as well and has met him.
We had letters from my mom, one from my sister, one from my SO's parents and few of my friends and our realtor who became our friend lol.
You don't necessarily have to do parents :)

Gooodluck!

we didn't put in any letters from friends or family in terms of a stat declaration....we just put in photos (lots of us with other people, not just the two of us), emails written between us and friends talking about our relationship (good times and bad- important to show the bad times), cards addressed to both of us (Christmas, wedding, engagement, etc...), invitations to weddings and parties addressed to both of us...(none of these docs were notarized, in fact, we didn't send in one piece of evidence that was! - just the marriage certificate) and that was ok for us.... I wouldn't worry too much if it isn't notarized, but it's better to be safe than sorry I guess. As long as you have enough evidence to show it's a real genuine relationship i'm sure you will be fine! good luck =)

For common law, they need letters, notarized.

But if you included a marriage certificate, then you don't need notarized letters since you applied as spouses. Common law and conjugal applications require notarized letters because these couples do not have the legal document married applicants have.

@Remrov, If you mother is willing great; don't worry about whether or not your father will or his parents. Ask someone else close to you who has knowledge of your relationship and/or your common law status. It could be your (or your boyfriend's) friend, sibling, cousin, landlord, neighbour, employer. The more the better, in my opinion, but I believe at least two of them must be notarized for all conjugal and common law applicants regardless of country of origin.

General information to ask folks to put in these letters include (I paraphrased this from the letter I sent to my friends and family asking for statutory declarations)...

1. A description of how they know you ...examples
I am a friend of XXX, I was a co-worker of XXX, I am the sister of XXX, etc

2. A description of how they became aware of your relationship, when they met the other partner, activities participated in together, knowledge of your living arrangements, etc

3. A statement to the effect that, in their judgement, you are in a real, loving, ongoing, genuine relationship based on their personal knowledge and experiences

China and Latin American countries:
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela are not asked to provide a notarized statutory declaration from family/friends.
I did however call CIC to confirm and they said you would not need to produce any other declarations then what the country guide + main guide requires. Just an FYI. :) I know the OP has already checked their in country guide and they need it, but it may be confusing for others applying from these countries when they read this. :)

Having said that, it wouldn't hurt to have 2 notarized and might even strengthen the application it's just not required with these countries.

Goodluck everyone :)
And Allison, thanks so much for your previous post as I used a similar format when i emailed my friends and family for support letters :D it was super helpful!
