My wife is a dual citizen - American and German. She, at present, has an American passport and no German passport. She's thinking of applying for her German passport. The checklist asks for her most recent travel document. Would we have to submit her German passport, rather than her American one if she applied for and received her German one before we sent off the application? We would prefer to have her apply as an American, due to the generally faster processing times. Or could we submit both?

Hi,
The only way your application would be delayed, it's if you have incomplete documents, forms, mistakes and/or not enough proof of relationship.
If you're unable to get a passport or any other document, attach an "Letter" explaining why you can't provide those.
Sending both is the right thing to do. :)

Proof of identity documents
  • Proof of identity is an important part of an application to become a permanent resident:
    • Carefully review the checklist sections on identity documents, travel documents, and passports.
    • Make sure you submit a copy of your birth certificate, and (if you have included dependants in your application) the birth certificates of your family members.
    • We will return the application to you if you don’t provide all the documents requested.
    • If you are unable to submit a document, you must include a detailed explanation of why you are unable to submit this document so that your application is not automatically returned to you.

My question was whether submitting the German passport with/instead of the American one would cause her to go through one of the notoriously slow European visa offices rather than being processed as an American relatively quickly in Mississauga. If so, we would hold off on applying for her German passport until after the application is submitted.
