I wanted to ask is it wise to purchase a new mobile along with a data plan once i land in canada or its better and cheaper to purchase it from outside

Get it after you land. Most mobile carriers subsidize the cost of the phone if you sign up for a 2 year plan.

My suggestion is not to go for a full time service right away. For example.... go with Chatr for a month and then move to Rogers (as a post paid). If you already have a phone with you, use that for a few months before you sign the contract.

Take a look at plans called BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). They're cheaper and you don't need to commit to a 2-year contract.

I have been with Bell for several years. There are also Telus and Rogers as main providers. Koodo offers low cost plans but coverage is not that great. There are also a few regional providers around. When you land ask around at work. Most will be able to point you to someone that could work

Koodo is owned by TELUS and uses the exact same network as TELUS. Further, TELUS and Bell have a network sharing agreement, so Koodo uses the exact same network as Bell as well (and Virgin and Public, etc.). Coverage is exactly the same.

In Ontario, I'm going with Fido.

Unfortunately there is telecommunication oligopoly established in Canada. Big operators charge exorbitant prices, and whenever a small operator shows up its get acquired by big ones sooner or later.

There are practically no differences in mobile planes and pricing between different operators, so you can select one at random.
