So, I feel like this thread turned into a witch hunt. The OP made mistakes and owned up to them. They're here to find out how to fix them. Maybe we should focus on support, rather than brow-beating or ridicule?

As Ponga stated, if they don't find out, he could be fine. But the problem is, if they do sometime down the road, it can be a time bomb.

So, I would look into finding an immigration lawyer who has a good reputation, and speak with them about it. One thing lawyers are really good at, it's deal making.

Additionally, an MP's office might be able to help. If nothing else, to provide advice from their in house counsel.

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can advise me on this issue.

My wife sponsored me in 2014 and I got my PR through marriage sponsorship last year and landed in Canada (before that I had been in Canada for two years as an international student). Before my current marriage, I had married someone else around 8 years ago and we broke up in two weeks and the formal process of separation occurred after only six months in my own country. But I did not declare this marriage to CIC when I was filling out the proper forms as, in a very stupid way, I thought since the very short marriage that I had was not in Canada and was not based on Canadian laws so I don't need to put its information on my files. I am fully aware it is such a stupid and unintended misrepresentation of my previous martial status but I really doubt if the officer would care and it would change anything. My current wife was also fully aware of my story and she had the same silly thought. What should I do now? Do I lose my PR if CIC finds out about this? Does it make any difference if I myself inform CIC about the mistake I made?
It's been a few days since this issue came to my attention and it has really occupied my mind. I very much appreciate if you could kindly advise me on this matter.
I see this as critical issue and concern but I am just wondering whether somebody brought this to your attention or it's just you randomly thinking about it and getting yourself stressed out? I know it's a big misrepresentation issue which had already happened and you can't undo this unless you travel back through time. If I were you, I would lay low, play by their rules, be nice to wife, get the citizenship and stop discussing about this to people that you think of could cause issue.

Bottom line is try to completely remove this from your past and come clean, like I said before try not to tell anyone that you got married/divorced once, try not to bring this up ever. Even when you give out your personal and confidential information to someone like CIC, CRA or whoever it might be just show them that this is your first marriage (Officially and legally yes). In CIC eyes this is your first wedding as per the immigration document. I know you're trying to hide your past which can be so hard but honestly there's not much you can do.

Be nice to your wife otherwise it can turn upside down. When the days and years go by this whole thing will eventually get suppressed or unnoticed but it's totally in your hands how you handle/tackle the situation. Just so you know I am not trying to scare you!

So, you're advocating that the OP continue to lie and misrepresent himself?

I am not saying this is what I would do, just so you know I wouldn't have even lied at the first place. But what else he could do? Do you have any options left? Carolbb, first you said I was right and now you're contradicting your own statement. I don't know what point you're trying to make here.

OP didn't even mention or confirm his first marriage has been legally (Approved and recognized by government of that country) approved by the country where he got married. Maybe we have to wait for OP to confirm before we come to conclusion or give our opinion/suggestions to him.

As I thought about it more, it's moral wrong and you wonder why people like that make it hard for honest couples

Not morally wrong, LEGALLY wrong. He's misrepresented his case when he applied for a visa. That is legally wrong and he could find his PR revoked.

I find it reprehensible that people feel it's alright to lie and cheat the system and even more reprehensible that other people encourage it. Lies, cheating, deceit make it much more difficult for people like my partner and me who have been 100% honest.
