My husband's country of nationality (Austria) has a mandatory 6 month military service that he had to do about 8 years ago. The problem is, he can't remember who his commanding officer was and when he called to ask they couldn't tell him either. We've looked everywhere to find any documents from that time and can't find any. We do know what his company was called but that's it.. What can we do?

Thanks!

Simply attach a supplementary sheet stating that he does not remember and the unsuccessful steps that he took to try to discover the missing information. I did not remember either - I could not even remember the number of my regiment let alone the commanding officer's name. There was no problem: PR application was successful.

Ok thank you so much!

I am so happy someone has shared something sbout this. My husband is in the same situation we will be appyling inland for PR.
He is a Croatian citizen and as well had a mandatory 10 month military service back in 1997. He can 't remember anyone's name, I was also worried that he may have problems with cic regarding this, and that they may ask for more detail.
So from the posts here I see that they do not ask for more info if the service was mandatory?

Thanks all :)

I am not sure that they differentiate between mandatory and voluntary military service. It is just that if you cannot remember, you cannot remember! You cannot get blood out of a stone. I am sure that the VOs are reasonable people and act reasonably when an applicant demonstrates that he has done his best to answer truthfully.

Hello,
My Father was also in the Military for the mandatory 2 years of service in 1972.
The country was the Ukraine and it was still part of soviet russia at that time.
He does not remember any info about his officer either.
We are dong a parent sponsorship and the forms ask for any service history.
It does not ask for any documents but we managed to have one from the Ukraine military and had it translated.
I added it to his application as it may help.

Cheers,

I am filing out the form IMM 5669.

Regarding question 11: military and/or paramilitary service.
My husband had to do mandatory military service in Croatia for 10 months back in 1997. Do I have to put this information down? He did not serve anywhere, and there was no active combat. He dosen't even know his commanders name or anything.

Thanks and advice would help.

Chris, just read the second comment to this thread again:

Just make a note that it was mandatory service. I'm sure that CIC had come across this before. It would be nice if he at least remembered the town or city he was stationed in. It's better to be thorough as much as possible, and make a note explaining any lack of information. It is not a good idea to leave something out!
