I think alot of it is US media hype, but having said that my fiance has seen/heard 4 shootings now in Zapopan over the last couple of months (just outside GDL), one was his neigbour, another couple about 4 blocks away and another in thier area. Although I guess the thing to remember is that you will probably be privy to just as many shootings in any large US city, or canadian city for that matter ( 3 shootings in my neighborhood this year so far in Vancouver). So its all a matter of revelance. Like in Vancouver, much of the violence is targeted and does not affect the average joe, except things like when my mother-in-law couldnt go to walmart because someone had been shot in the parking lot, she just went home and did her shopping later. I have felt just as safe in Mexico as I do here and I find most people will say the same.

Now the interesting thing will be to see what happens with the elections now over, there is a lot of people wanting change, I wouldnt be suprised if you see a bit of a revolution amongst the common people, but thats just my two cents :)
I was just about the say the same thing, i saw the armoured car thing. i guess its different for people living here with businesses and assests to worry about they want something to make them feel safe and i wouldnt blame them.

I have a friend in zapopan aswell. and we were in guadalajara 1 month ago for over a week, and i felt completely safe walking around in the evening, alot of people like to hang out outside.. me being from canada vancouver aswell its weird to see that.(and before i left vancouver there was 2 shootings across the street from my work right downtown) but here people say if you see families outside in the evening, generally the area is safe, because if it wasnt people would be hiding inside their homes after dark.

i think mexico is not as safe as canada, but for an average person i feel safe here and traveling around the country. many of the crimes here are targeted aswell they just have bad aim :p just kidding! :)

yeah the election might stir things up a little. ive heard people saying they want a revolution too.. but i also heard that last election and it didnt happen. theres been some protests. anyways lets hope it stays peaceful.

its interesting to see how people feel being in different parts of mexico.
:)

You are right, that it is not as safe as Canada for sure, but i think Canada is a bit of an anomaly in a world scale as far as pblic safety, we are either just to lazy or polite to bother lol ! However I do not want to down play the violence in Mexico either, innocent people have been killed and there has been that extra brutality of making it public in very Macabre ways, obviously in an attempt to put people in fear. But I dont think people should fear visiting Mexico, there are much more violent and brutal places in the world. I find the US media tries as hard as possible to stop everyone from going there and it is costing them alot in the tourist industry.

It will be interesting, I kind of hope people do stand up, I think that Mexico has needed a revolution for some time and I also believe with social media and the internet that minds are expanding and people see possibilities like never before, it will be very interesting, I imagine it will only be the young the ones stepping up but it has to start somewhere !

perfectly said!!
i agree with all of that.
Mexico does need change and they need people willing to step up and not fear prosecution. unfortunatly alot of people are scared to say what they think.. its sad. But the young in mexico now are very vocal! and i hope some change comes out of the hard work! ;D

The most horrific stories I saw in Mexico came while I was living in Mexico, or from Mexican media sources, which are not censored like ours is. I agree, it is usally targeted, and they do sometimes make an effort to make violent crimes very public. But what scares me the most are the kidnappings. Those ARE innocent people. And majority of the time don't make it out alive. My husband's cousin was a kidnapping victim. The kidnappers demands are like $100,000 dollars. Who has the kind of cash anywhere?? Anyway, it is sad, because Mexico is such a beautiful country with so much to offer. We had hoped to move back there eventually. I hope things get better.

Yes, the kidnappings.
my fiances stepdad is actually from a very wealthy spanish background family, in mexico with alot of land. and his cousin was kidnapped 2 months ago. which i thought was kind of scary. so i asked why cause i was curious, and i found out because this guy has a hotel in costa esmeralda that makes ALOT of money. so they kidnapped him specifically because they knew he had alot of money and could afford to pay off the cartel.
that being said im not sure if thats the case for all of them, but i heard its mostly people who they know has alot of money. hense why the politicians get kidnapped.
it seems like the richer you are the more you have to be careful.

but none the less thats the only kidnapping i have heard of in the past 4 months.

so i dont want to scare anyone because i still feel very safe here and i feel safe travelling around aswell. :)

i also hope things get better, i know stephen harper is contributing alot of money to help stop organized crime in mexico, caribbean and central america. so i have hope for mexico still!! its such a beautiful country with so much culture.

Yes, the richer you are the more careful you have to be for sure. I've never had any problems while in Mexico. But it helps to be careful. :)

Hey all, I am wondering (if this has been already talked about pls direct me to it) For the new police check, SSR, if a family member is going for you, what do they have to bring in order to get in on the persons behalf? My SO's mom is going to be flying to Mexico City for us and we are going to be sending the packages to her soon so I want to make sure we have everything we need, thanks! :)

Hi!,
my spouses mom went to get his police check for him in Puebla, and this is what she needed to recieve them on his behalf.

spouses birth certificate, copy of IFE. 2 photos black and white. document of finger prints(we got the finger prints from our local police station in vancouver, you can get them from your local police station. and a carta podar saying you allow someone to go on your behalf, the carta podar we made on microsoft office ourselves.

i hope this helps!

Hi there :) - that's nice of her. She will need his birth certificate, copy of passport or IFE, and a 'comprobante de domicilio' in addition to a power of attorney and an official ID of her own. See this page for instructions. Also, consider calling +52-55-5242-8100 x18705 to double check the latest requirements and office address (they may be moving).

LeisaP - the fingerprints are required for the PGR, not the new SSP requirements. ;)
