That's an interesting question! Sorry I don't have any relevant info to share with you. Have you tried looking into travel agencies? Perhaps they might sell some sort of coverage.

In my case, I'm not planning on getting any kind of coverage, I'll just wing it and see what happens. I hardly ever get sick anyway, and when I do, I avoid doctors like the plague! There's a joke that when you go to the IMSS here, they cure your fever, but you come out of there with pneumonia!

Thanks Edgar! I think my husband would agree with you about wanting to wing it and about the IMSS too lol
I'm torn I think I might get him the insurance for the 3 months I'm not too much of a risk taker I would want it just to be safe but I wish it was a bit more affordable..

Edit:

Have you tried Mundo Joven? They're a travel agency that specializes in catering to backpackers, young travelers and the like, so they have some affordable options. It doesn't hurt to take a look at their site, these are the coverage plans they have: http://www.mundojoven.com/Seguro/Cobertura.aspx

Thank you I will check the link

Just make sure it is for your country of residency and not travel insurance. I suggest being very careful with travel insurance since once your husband lands he will be a Canadian resident and travel insurance usually just covers you in other countries. It would stink for you not to be covered if there's an accident (hopefully not!) after paying the premium...

1. Yes, there is a 3 month waiting period, and he won't be able to leave Ontario for more than 30 days during the first 6 months to be eligible for OHIP coverage. If you want to check for alternative providers check OHIPs website - they have a phone number you can call to get a list of providers that provide new PR coverage during the waiting period - see here

2. It's hard to tell without the specifics of his situation. Depending on his immigration status, he may be eligible for OHIP. Otherwise, he could explore an international coverage, which are expensive (not travel insurance since he is living in Ontario).

Thank u I will check the alternate companies to seee which has the best rate/coverage for my husband.
For my friend I think your right about it being expensive.. I will give him the ideas and see what he things I think its probably better to save the money and pay upfront when/if u need the medical attention

For those of you who have submitted a case specific enquiry, did you get an email that says your submission was received? After I pressed submit I got a message that said my enquiry was received and I would hear something in 28 days. But I did not get a confirmation email.

If you got one could you copy paste it for me?

I doesn't let me quote or paste my email! :S I have to type whatever, and then edit my message to paste what I originally wanted to type, anybody else having a similar problem?

jeepers, I really hope this joint bank account thing is not an actual requirement ! We have applied common law and have no such thing, we couldnt open one while he was here illegally and we cant open one now unless we are in the same country at the same time which is unfortuatnely looking impossible until he lands. Any news on whats happened since, I am very curious, definately do not want to find ourselves in the same situation !

Hi everyone!

I am curious to know what is after landing?... Am I going to have automatically the right of working wherever I want?... Or do I have to do more paper work once I am in Canada?...

Thanks!!

You have to go to Service Canada to get you SIN, you take your Confirmation of Permanent Residence along with your passport. They'll give you the number right away, but the card takes two weeks to get there. You also gotta go to the RAMQ (Régie de la assurance maladie du Québec) to get started on the process to get your health card.

Do you speak French already? if not, are you gonna take French lessons? :)

Edgar, so I ended up sending the same email and attachments to mexico-im-enquiry @ international.gc. ca and I got that email response you copy pasted to me. So did you email them from gmail or whatever or did you use the case specific form on the CIC website?

I use HCC Medical Insurance Services for my coverage... they have coverage for Canada as well, I use the Atlas Policy for when I am living in Mexico... not sure what the cost would be for Canada. I paid 350 for a year in Mexico tho.

I've done both throughout my several interactions with CIC. When I sent them a case specific form I got a reply within two days. Normally when I send a regular email it takes them about a month to reply.
