I checked the Open Data Project. My computer won't let me open the Spreadsheet right now, but someone else can verify. It was created in 2010, but modified (I would assume updated) April 2013.

Yep that's the one i use. 50% of Rome "spouse & partner" class applications are done in 8 months or less. 30% are done in 6 months or less.

Well that's even better! Thanks Rob :D

you are 20 and you want to get married? lol. i second the user who mentioned applying for a student visa and taking it easy. who knows you might feel different about your boyfriend in 4 years times. if it comes to that then at least you will have a degree in hand..;D
Life is made of choices after all... if I study, I'll have to wait other 4-5 years to see him and stay with him... not worth it! I chose to give up on going to university cause we started to have other kind of projects... we both sacrificed something and it's true that there's nothing sure in life, but I won't never be able to know it if I don't try.
So, first of all, I need to go there for 6 months at least to see if we really are made for each other. If it doesn't work, which is very unlikely to happen, it means I'll come back... let down, but I can sadly tell myself I tried... i couldn't live with remors.
If it effectively work as I think, the next step will be living together for other six months totaling 1 year... so after 2 years of relationship in total I guess I will be able to know if we really can spend a life together and get married no? I'm young, that's true... but if you can and if you want, why shouldn't we do it? Why should we wait again? This is what I think ::)

14 months means - 80% of applications are done in 14 months or less. Many applications are done in less than 14 months. 50% are done in 13 months or less.

To get a better idea of how long it *really* takes, you can talk to people on the Rome Thread. What I suspect is - people applying from countries outside Italy (especially ones that require a visa) are what is slowing down the process. If you apply outside your home country, the IO makes special trips to interview you in your home country. (Example, if you're Swiss and apply through the Paris VO, the IO at the Paris office will arrange a trip to Switzerland to interview you, if needed.) However, these trip are only done 1-2 times per year, so if you apply at the "wrong" time, you may have to wait 11 months before the interview comes to you.

Another item that slows down processing are security checks. If you've lived in Italy your whole life, there isn't much to worry about. It's if you've lived in countries that have fringe governments, hostile (To Canada) governments, "terrorist" governments, etc. Many of them are on poor terms with Canada and some of them just have poor public infrastructure and services. So when CIC requests your security check, they can take a very long time to reply. I've heard of some taking over a year to acknowledge the Canadian government's request.

So those are two big reasons why applications can take so long. In your case, #1 won't apply to you - and probably won't happen. Visa exempt citizens are rarely interviewed. (But if you are, you will have to go back to Rome.) #2 just depends on where you have lived, but if you've lived in a "modern" country (Visa exempt countries) then there is little to worry about.

It is not a guaranteed process time. (There is no such thing.) It is a guideline.

Getting married won't change your processing times. What it will do is make CIC request a copy of your marriage certificate. Anytime they are waiting on you to send something in, they are allowed to set your file aside until you provide the requested documents. So it has the possibility of slowing them down. So if you do get married, I would inform them by mailing the marriage certificate with a letter explaining you got married and here's the certificate. You can even include a few pictures from the wedding. That way they don't have to wait.

CIC (and the Canadian government) consider Common-Law partners to be the same as married for all intensive purposes. You have the same rights and both are legal unions. There is little difference aside from a formal legal marriage contract.
Nah, I've never lived outside Italy :) I was born here and I've ever lived here... I just visited some countries for not more than 8 days, but never moved or lived abroad. People from Italy doesn't need a visa so everything will be ok, I'm sure... the only reason why it will probably take so long is that we always do things soooo slowly! ???

Good for you! :) It's not easy to have a long distance relationship and you have done it for almost a year already - that sure must mean something.
All the best :) :)

Don't give up university. Just don't do it. I'm speaking from experience.

1)She can always go to university here once she is a PR.
2) Where did all these Laura's come from?

You could also go to university while in Canada so maybe apply for a student visa? You won't be able to work for about 2.5 years waiting for a PR so you may as well study in that time at a college or university nearby. It may alleviate the pressure on the relationship especially one so new given you haven't met previously.

The cost of university education for an international student might be a bit of a stretch for a young couple.

She can work if she gets the student work permit. Or consider long distance learning or a college. Anything has got to be better than sitting around for 2.5 years on a visitor visa.

She can do online university with any university, including Canadian ones without needing a study permit. That's what I'm doing to keep sane - except I use an American university.

Seems to be the best name I think :)

She wants advise on how to get into Canada, not spiels on going to uni....!!!!!!!!!!! I like the idea of getting PR THEN going to uni :)

With a 3 year wait first

I've never even started it... I couldn't choose between two subjects I like... they're too different and in both cases I wouldn't find a job... here, neither in Canada unfortunately... plus is expensive, I'd rather work instead
