How long? That depends on what visa office you are going through.

What do you do next? Keep waiting until you are asked to do anything.

(This is in response to your recent email enquiry to the Immigration Section of the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi.

If she has been asked to submit her passport to New Delhi, then that is all that needs to be done. Otherwise, wait for them to communicate with her. You don't need to do anything more, all correspondence will take place with your wife and it's just a matter of time. It's been 3 and a half months, given that New Delhi's time is 6 months for 80% of cases, that means it could be over soon.

The 6 months counts from when New Delhi received the application, not when you sent it to Mississauga. It takes as long as they need it to take, all we can do is wait.

According to the CIC website ND is currently @ 8 months and you have to add the 3 months it took for the sponsorship approval so it could take up to 11 months but could take longer if you have to resubmit or send in additional information....

It's your wife's application, actually, and that is why they will not give you any information. Order the GCMS notes if you want to know what's going on. Your wife will be required to sign a consent allowing them to release the information to you.

The request has to be submitted by someone in Canada, who is appointed by your wife to get the information for her. She must sign the consent form. It costs $5.00 Cdn to get the records.

Are you a citizen or a P.R yourself? If you're a citizen, you have no issues. If you're a P.R. you are supposed to be residing in Canada to remain eligible to sponsor your spouse. Short visits on your holidays are fine (2-3 weeks), extended visits can mean you are not a sponsor within the meaning of the Regulations.
