Medical Check Question

Hi, I'm starting the process of sponsoring my wife to come to Canada, and I'm having trouble finding out a few things.

One, if we do outland, does she need to have the medical exam done and sent in before we start the process, or do we send everything in and only get the medical check when prompted? If we do inland, is it any different?

And two, if we were to do inland, can she come to Canada as a visitor and begin the process there? I know it takes much longer, but she would be able to work within 4-5 months, right? While the PR status is in processing, can her son (dependent) attend school or is that unrealistic? I know some people say it's -possible- but to me it sounds sort of sketchy. Opinions?

where is the applicant from? do not go by the processing times for outland listed on the cic website... they are not average times. depending on where your wife is from, it is very very very likely she would be completely approved as an outland pr applicant in the same amount of time or LESS than getting the OWP through inland. Inland is not a good choice for many many many people, and a lot people end up regretting the decision down the road when they realize people from their country were approved in 6 mo. or less. Right now, there are some outland applicants that are getting approved in 2-3 months TOTAL.

as for the medical - for outland - it's usually best to submit it upfront. this will limit any delays in the processing. it is not required upfront though. if it's not upfront, then CIC will request it later. It's usually cheaper to get it done in canada.

I will refrain from answering questions regarding inland until you confirm where the applicant is from. again, there is a 99.9% chance she is much better off applying outland. she can be IN canada as a visitor while her outland application processes. I am not sure the rules for children's schooling. I think it is provincial/school board specific, so you will want to confirm with your local school board what they need to qualify to go to school before becoming a PR.

She's from the US. We're currently together in Florida. The medical check for her and her son, all in, looks to be around 900 USD.

Basically, our plan was to start the process here and apply outland, then head to Canada with her and her son as a visitor. However, if he can't attend school, they're going to have to remain here until their PR status is approved. I know that this can be very fast, but I'm worried that there could be delays that draw it out... This information is so hard to find from official sources haha.

So if we do the medical check and have it ready up front, it will significantly decrease the processing time?

DO NOT APPLY INLAND... YOUR ONLY CHOICE SHOULD BE OUTLAND!!!! US applicants are currently taking 2-3 months for total outland approval. check out the us applicant thread, the march applicant thread and the april applicant thread. March applicants are already seeing approval, and April applicants just started. The sooner you get your application in, the higher the chance it will get done very quickly. even at the longest, it will be 5-8 months - the OWP is not a reason to apply inland for US applicants! I would not make a decision based on the kid's schooling, because even if they are eligible for school during inland, my guess is they would need AIP first (approval in principle) - this takes 12-16 months to get! Your school board will be able to confirm their rules.

DO NOT APPLY INLAND...DO NOT APPLY INLAND...DO NOT APPLY INLAND... HAVE I MENTIONED, DO NOT APPLY INLAND?

Yes, if you do the medicals up front, the processing will be shorter than if waiting until requested. it's impossible to determine if the application will see other delays, as it's specific to how complete your application is, and whether they need additional information. I'm assuming you're quoting the price in Florida? Medicals are way cheaper in Canada. If she is coming soon for a visit, you may want to wait till she gets here to do them. you can always send in your application without it, and as soon as you get sponsor approval, send the receipt to the visa office to get it connected to your application before it starts processing.

Thank you! How long does it usually take to get sponsorship approval? Weeks, months, what's normal for that...? I only ask because for us the reason we'd wait on doing the medical check is financial. 900 USD for that, plus ~1200 CAD for the immigration process itself... it's quite overwhelming, especially when only one of us is working haha.

I appreciate your input.

for Outland, SA is taking anywhere from 30-60 days. For recent US applicants, it seems that's the longest part of the application process. You don't have to pay all the fees upfront. The only fees required up front are the sponsor fee and applicant fee. you can pay the RPRF later. This will be requested before they officially approve the applicant. While some people suggest this also causes a delay, it's certainly not significant. when i went through it in 2014, my process was 5 months, and i waited to pay the RPRF until it was requested. got my approval paper in the mail within 2 weeks of paying it.

I'm a U.S. outland applicant from April and just received my Confirmation of Permanent Residence. The whole process took less than 3 months for me (which is much faster than you'd even get the OWP from the inland application) and that's looking like it's fairly normal for Americans lately.

Yes, you certainly can apply OUTLAND while entering Canada as a visitor. All legit. And yes, to being able to have her medical done here in Canada, roughly $300 in Manitoba. There is a list on the CIC website. Enter Panel Physicians (as we can't post links on this site). And you do not have to have a UCI #. That's the number that will be assigned to your Sponsorship/PR application and will come to you later.

We are going through the same process right now with the family here in Canada already. There are Immigration Help Centres as well, that can help you through the process, no charge, check your paperwork as well before submission. You can make a donation to them though, they are so helpful. Of course, there are other help centres in Canada, that was just an example. Good luck!

Given the speed at which American apps are being processed recently, not doing the medical will most most likely cause a delay. Beg, borrow or steal (except don't actually steal) to get the money to do it all upfront.

And for a dose of reality - every submission is different. Yes, it is best to do outland. Yes, submitting a thorough application with everything up front is also the best idea. That in mind - not every person gets their SA and the rest of the approval as quickly as some others. You could be the same as others or you could be longer. Just saying to be prepared that delays can and often do happen. Good luck!
