Word by word is difficult : translate the general meaning and include an explanation that you have translated to the best of your abilities to give an idea of the meaning, but it's not a word by word translation.
Regarding the question about Principal applicant/Sponsor:
Principal applicant is the one coming to Canada and applying for PR.
Sponsor is the Canadian or the PR in the couple.
The easiest way not to get confused by the forms is to keep them separate when you fill them out. Get the checklist, and put on one side all the forms for the applicant, and on the other, all the forms for the sponsor. Makes it easier that way.
