The principal applicant will receive the passport request, and I don't believe the sponsor is notified. However, the sponsor is notified in the event of a refusal. I don't think the sponsored party hears from CIC if the application is denied - it would be up to their sponsor to inform him or her.
Really?? That seems a little backwards to me.... ah wait... this is immigration we are talking about... ha so sorry I forgot.

But seriously... it seems odd that the sponsor would get that info when it is technically not their application.

Actually, remember that without the sponsor, a family class applicant has no standing before Immigration. In the event of a denial, both sponsor and applicant are advised, but it is the sponsor who receives instructions on how to appeal the denial because only a sponsor has rights of appeal. Everything about the family class is predicated on having an eligible Canadian citizen or PR to sponsor the application, so in truth and fact, it is THEIR application.

Sponsors are not usually advised when the application is approved. That's why scammers can arrive in Canada without their spouses knowing they have been approved. Now that, I find backward.

Ok ... that makes more sense to me explained that way. Thanks :)

Yes, it does seem backward that the sponsor would not be informed that they have definitely now got financial responsibility for the next 3 years of someone.

Well technically the sponsor commits to a 3 year undertaking the moment they send in those forms to CPCM and they have up to the time that the person determined to be a member of the family class lands in Canada to cancel their sponsorship. Sponsorship is the foundation on which this whole process stands, like CharlieD said. Once sponsorship is gone, it doesn't matter what assessments were done to the PR applicant's file at the visa office - it's over with. About the issue with the visa-issued spouses arriving to land and not telling the sponsor, that is really interesting considering that I have heard of several people whose files are being processed in Buffalo who had to have the BO contact their spouse over the phone while they were at the POE to be processed.....and this is Buffalo we're talking about- not a lot of MOCs.

Well, I know several cases of the applicant arriving in Canada without contacting the sponsor. There is one case where the applicant gave immigration a different address and name of the person he would be staying with so they contacted the sponsor to verify the facts... but in general there are quite a few that have arrived here and the sponsor never knew they were on the way.

This is why I am surprised that the sponsor is not notified of the decision.

Recently there was this huge brouhaha over a Pakistani wife landing in Canada without informing the sponsor, who had actually decided to divorce her. And she wanted to be admitted on humanitarian grounds. Wierd but true :-/

The "Pakistani bride dumped at Toronto airport" story? Yeah, I had read it. Ironically, said bride is freakin' hot as hell supermodel gorgeous (well, in my estimation, from looking at her picture), rich, and educated, so I have no idea why the guy wanted to divorce her. It later became a he-said, she-said about the real reason being that he demanded a 50,000 dollar dowry and her family rejected it.

I take two lessons from this story: 1) the unfortunate reality that if you're being sponsored by someone, it really is entirely in their power if you get PR or not.....if there is no breakdown in the relationship, then of course it's totally in CIC's power.....but if there's a breakdown in the relationship, even if CIC issues you a visa you are screwed if your spouse changes his or her mind and says "no".....and that sponsoring spouse has the moment until you land to do it. This case was that extreme point of "the moment until you land."

Secondly, and I hope I'm not offending anyone's culture here, but this was also an extreme case of an arranged marriage. I think that most arranged marriages are arranged courtships as well. This one was literally an "arranged marriage" because they did not see each other until the wedding, according to the story. Now, perhaps they had written or telephonic communication, but I for one am reluctant to believe anything my future spouse says until I see the words coming out of his mouth in front of me. Sad story though.

It kind of puts an even greater connection and trust element into one's marriage, eh? What a beautiful gift to sponsor your spouse. Of course, I wish it was the old days where you just showed up, stated your name, and entered the country no matter what.

Twiddling my thumbs and getting punchy!

Lol, those were the days ;) I am on a Canadian-American couples listserv, and I recall one person said it cost about $50 to do it on the American side decades ago.

Hi everyone.
Guess what?
Hubby is coming tommorow.
Finally. Yay!

I had looked forward to this day for sooooo long with so many plans of a grande "welcome", inc a special meal and desert, sparkling clean home, romantic bedroom including red roses (petals) on the bed, somewhat-matching tops for our daughter and I, bla bla bla...
But guess what? Right now, my home is not-so sparkling, no matching clothes planned yet, nor meals, rose petals or nothing... and none of these are planning to change between now and when he gets in. Just tired me at work, didnt even get the chance to get my eyebrows done. Ha!
:p

HAHAHAHA... ok so I am going ot play devils advocate here... if she was fat and ugly... would you guys say the same thing?? ... LOL

We are all human... and all looking for the same thing... Love and Acceptance.
